The Joomla Update Log

A number of users experience problems when updating from Joomla 3 to Joomla 4. If you find yourself in this position, please open your administrator/logs/joomla_update.php file with a text editor and see what is there - especially at the end. To show what you should see I have created a log file to look at - for the update of a clean newly installed Joomla 3.10.6 site to Joomla 4.1.0

The green progress bar that you see during update is displayed while the new files are being downloaded and unpacked on top of existing files. That gets you to line 12 of the log. Then come 496 sql updates - that is where something is likely to go wrong. And when something goes wrong the rest of the sql updates are abandoned. How far did your install process go - look at the end of your log file.

Sometimes the process goes to completion successfully but you end up with a broken site. That is most likely due an incompatible extension, especially a plugin. If the joomla_update.php log file looks good you could try disabling third party extensions with phpMyAdmin.

If you try to update again with restored Joomla 3 files you must also first restore the Joomla 3 database!

This post is just to provide an easy reference to what the joomla_update log is supposed to contain.

Yep. Use the backup that was taken before the update.

We see many people restore the backup in their existing web space without removing the files first. Thats the cause of many issues
