Installing an extension in Joomla! 1.0.x

I do not know how the installers work.  I cannot find a clear answer anywhere in the forums.  I cannot find an answer on google.  I have looked for over 3 hours and I am really aggravated at this.  I have figured I have to somehow ftp the zip file to someplace on my server and somehow pull it up from my admin installers option on the admin backend.  I need this broken down one time so that I can understand what I  am doing here.  If someone gives me a bogus link to another thread with halfway answers I think I will scream.  Go to the forums search and type in "mod installers" or "installing a mod" or any other combination and you will find absolutely nothing for a newbie.  I need help with a very simple thing here. Can someone not scold me or divert me and give me a straight direct answer?

Modules, Mambots, Components are available as zip packages.
Once you have downloaded the package on your hard drive, go into the back-end (administration) and click on the Installers menu.
Choose the right installer depending on the extension you want to install.
Browse your hard drive until you get the zip package.
Click Upload file and install.

I'd be interested to know how you searched for answers so that we can make the faq section better. It seems like you shoud have found the above faq.
