I'm using the installation instructions to try to install Joomla on GoDaddy (without using their value-added install) and I'm running into problems.

I've verified that I'm using Linux.

I downloaded 1.0.11.zip... Oh, duh. I think I see the problem already!

When I unzipped 1.0.11.zip, it gave me a TON of files. I thought I had to FTP them all over. No, apparently -- since I'm starting from scratch -- I just need to unzip Joomla_1.0.11-Stable-Full_Package.zip and transfer THAT to the hosting account.

Let me try that and see if I get any further.

Yes, that was the problem. I just needed to unzip Joomla_1.0.11-Stable-Full_Package.zip and transfer THAT to the hosting account. I did that and opened a browser and typed in my web URL and it came up with the Joomla installation prompts. That's something I wasn't expecting, either: I've never done a web browser install of software before.

Once I got past that -- my unfamiliarity with the way the install was packaged and how web browser installs work -- it was easy!

Thanks!
Morven

GREAT NEWS ABOUT JOOMLA! & GODADDY

Post by maxx1968 » Fri Dec 15, 2006 7:39 pm

Okay folks here's the skinny....
GoDaddy has finally caught on and fixed their Joomla! Value Additions. Now when you click to have GoDaddy install Joomla! make sure and do the following:

1. When it asks for the directory to put Joomla!, blank out the input box. That way GoDaddy puts it into your root directory automatically! Yeah!

2. IMPORTANT! If you have a previous installation of Joomla! that you uploaded to your directory, make sure and remove the "Installation" folder or else it screws everything up!

I have GoDaddy's "Premium" Hosting Package and so far everything is working great!

Hope this helps - "J"
Working from home shouldn't feel like work!

Ive read all the post and seen the multiple sites on one host.  How would I go about putting multiple joomla installations in the same host and domain?

yah... my hosting provider (aplus.net) have the Joomla preconfigured in their control panel. Just php.ini configs are needed (there is a visual tool for them)

I think that depends on whether you want to install Joomla yourself or use GoDaddy's Value Applications.

The second option -- installing using GoDaddy's Value Applications is easiest, but you don't have control over Joomla updates or backing up your files.

The first option -- installing Joomla yourself -- isn't really that bad because there's a nice installation guide on this forum (search the beginning of this thread).

Morven,
who is still a newbie, but has done both

Hi amu0373,
The guide is missing again from the post. If you email it to me at [email protected], I can put it up on a wiki, so it will never be deleted. Thanks!!!

It's not missing, you'll need to log-in in order to see and download files off the forum.

I'm a novice to Joomla. Let me begin by saying this program and it's open availability and format is very, very cool. Kudos to all who have made it possible and continue to contribute.

OK, now I'm going to show my total ignorance with a few questions.

1. I'm starting from ground zero. I have a computer I'm about to reformat and also venture into the Linux world. Is it insane to attempt to venture into both Joomla and Linux at the same time?

2. If I were to start off in Windows, can the site and code, etc. be moved into a Linux format at a later date, without much ado?

3. If I design a site for a business friend, can the site be moved onto a Windows NT server from GoDaddy?

4. Any suggestions on the best place to begin. (Background: I'm not a programmer, I am a journalist and editor by trade. But I do maintain about 7 computers at a university, and maintain a news site via a CMS system there.  Our IT folks have jettisoned our site and said you need to find someone else to support and update your site, we're too busy.) Anyway, any suggestions on best places to begin?

Thanks in advance for any and all insights.

Very handy post, thankyou.

I have a question though that I can't seem to find any answers to

I have created a joomla site locally on our server, I have just got a godaddy account to host it but I don't know how to upload it while still keeping the databases linked, any advice?
thankyou

(2) I had to turn off the "define( 'RG_EMULATION', 1 )" to "define( 'RG_EMULATION', 0 )" which "0 = OFF" and "1 = ON". To do this you must go into your "globals.php" file in your Joomla! directory.

Would anyone mind telling me how to do this please. Step by step. I'm on Godaddy.

DONE IT  :D

hi
i just got joomla installed on godaddy ... i did my own installation .... then i enabled seo, changed the htaccess filename and it just did not work....  then after some trouble shooting i searched for some old .htaccess file (mambo) which was on my local machine and uploaded that htaccess and SEO worked like a charm

my question is there something wrong with the default htaccess provided with 1.0.12 or is it a godaddy specific setting.

thanks

I thought I had a successful installation, but when I hit go to website I received a fatal error.
Is there anything I can do now?
Can I remove the installation and re-try it?

Hi Alex:

Thanks for sharing the info.  I assumed you're talking about installation for version 1.0x.  Has anyone tried installing the 1.5 Beta version on GoDaddy and how did it go?

Thanks!

I installed it, can't remember the details but is was quite easy :pop

It runs smoothly on GoDaddy, that's for sure.

If I have some spare time, i'll try to update the manual for 1.5.

Cheers, Alex.

By purchasing a hosting plan :D  :(

You used a free hosting credit received with a domain purchase... you get the banner as a "gesture"  8)

Cheers, Alex.

Hi:

I tried using the free hosting credits to install Joomla 1.5 to GoDaddy, but ran into some problems:

1. In the Pre-Installation checks, it did not show "Directory and File Permissions" INFO.
2. It showed errors in the License page.  When reloaded, there's no check box to accept the license terms.
3. In the database configuration, after I input info the system returned an error message saying "The XML returned from the server can not be processed."

Can anyone share expertise on this?

Thanks!
Broworld

This manual worked great, and I finished the installation proud and walked away for about two months. When I came back today, now I can't log in as administrator to the backend, no matter what usernames and pws I try. The info I use for usernames and pws are pretty standard, so I'm shocked that I'm having this problem.

I can login as myself on the frontpage. But, when I enter "lost password," on the front page for my username, joomla routes me to my 404 error page that I set up with godaddy.com. I never get a pw in my inbox. You can try it out yourself at http://www.hottybootcamp.com

I think my administrator password might be something temporary or generic. I'm going to research what I might have set it to during the godaddy install manual. What's the easiest way to get back into my backend again if "lost password" doesn't work"? Thanks!!
