Update from 3.0 to 5.xx

Hi, i have a backaup of my old site that i think was running on 3.0x (or 3.9). It wont run on my new webserver service.

So, is it possible to update my site 3.0x somehow to 5.xx , i cant reach any admin pages to update that way . Is there a way via ftp, i upload a upgrade pack and then start the update on site somehow.

is the any free webservice where i can upload my old site free and start the upgrade from there, then backup everything and upload on my new site..

1. Use Wamp https://wampserver.aviatechno.net/
2. Create a folder in Wamp's \www folder e.g. \test1
3. Start Wamp and select suitable php and database versions (install them into wamp if needed)
4. Copy your site to \www\test1 https://docs.joomla.org/Copying_a_Jooml ... s_with_FTP when making the database in Wamp call it test1
5. Use Akeeba to backup your site https://www.akeeba.com/compatibility.html
6. Uninstall old/incompatible/vulnerable extensions/templates
7. Update Joomla, save, make a backup, 'rinse repeat' until the site breaks
8. Create a new folder in Wamp's \www folder e.g. \test2
9. Change the php/database versions wamp to suit the site
10. Use the last good backup to install into Wamp's \www\test2. The install will create the database to the name you chose during installation. (suggest test2)
11. Continue steps #5 #9 (with new folders/databases as needed) until you are up to date.

It will take some juggling but so long as you keep a backup you can always install to a fresh folder/database and try again. keeping the folder names and database names the same prevents a lot of confusion.

Important: There is no way to go directly from Joomla 3.9.x to Joomla 5.x without causing serious problems.

Basically, the way shown is correct (especially the advice to back up and the local test installation).
But the way using Akeeba Backup is less complicated (also described in the article mentioned above).

However, the following intermediate steps must be taken to be on the safe side:

• First, update your Joomla 3.9 site to version 3.10.x - this version includes a compatibility check for the move to 4.x.
  From there you can migrate to J4 (currently V4.4.3). Detailed instructions are available in the Joomla documentation.

The instructions are more than basic they are quite detailed. There is no 'one size fits all' so "some juggling" is needed to get the correct php/database versions that will work with the update from one Joomla to another. Some updates will fail because the next version of Joomla needs a higher version of php/database.

Nothing complicated about the Akeeba instructions. "10. Use the last good backup to install into Wamp's \www\test2. The install will create the database to the name you chose during installation. (suggest test2) "
Installing to a fresh folder/database prevent folder/file mismatch. It also keeps each update stage distinct (good house keeping).

When an update fails because of higher php/database version installing to a new folder/database of different php/database version is necessary.

The good tips about the different version requirements and the corresponding PHP versions do not change the fact that the necessary intermediate steps (J3.9.x → J3.10.x → J4.4.x → J5.0.x) were not pointed out.

No need as the Joomla update component will automatically show the correct version to update to. Although neither you nor myself mentioned to select the 'Next' update channel in the Update components Options. (well I have mentioned it now).

If the OP has problems they can always post back. But they haven't logged back in since 3 hours before I posted my first reply. Never mind it is there for others to see (as of now the thread has had 266 views).

As I mentioned before there is no 'one size fits all.

Well as he has not logged in to read them we don't know if he found them technically demanding or not. If he does not have the technical skills to update from an old version then the forum is not the place to teach such skills. All we can do is explain the procedure and advice from our experience.

HI, i tested all the suggestions above. But the site wont show. Seems to be database problem.
(session_start(): Failed to read session data: user (path: c:/wamp64/tmp) in C:\wamp64\www\matmonster\libraries\joomla\session\handler\native.php on line 260)

I have set all permissions to folder. Its like the old backup of my site requests a login to continue. I also tried to install joomla 3.8 then copy my files over the installations. Then i get same error like above..

So seems like it's something that stops joomla to startup.

I also setup a user in mysql with same login and password like old database, but same error..

I know some plugins in the website dont like the newest php 8.x
Verison 7 should work fine.

I exported a sql fil from mysql. I tried to import it to "new system" nothing changes..

The database is corrupt. It appears that the backup files and database sql are from after a failed update. I need the files and database backup from before the failed backup.

I could import the sql into a current mysql, but maybe it didnt help? Thank you very much for your help!!
The problem started when my webserver company upgraded ph to 8.0.. All crashed,. Its a cook book, and i need the recipies

You can get those from the database. Use Notepad++ to edit the sql file and you can copy/paste.
