Is it possible to display joomla default related articles in 3 columns? This is because I have many related articles and when they come one after the other the list becomes long.

Add the following to your css*:

  columns: 3;
  column-gap: 1em;
}

* If you are using Cassiopeia use user.css, a 3rd party template may use a different file.

I put this into the user.css, but it still show only one column.
