How to Hide/Mask Absolute URL

Post by astar » Sat Feb 23, 2008 10:07 am

Hi,

I have created a website on 1.0.14 and would like to hide/mask the absolute URL while browsing through various pages. I prefer to keep the visible web address to be the same for all the pages in my website.

Will this harm the search engine optimization in any way. ???

Thanks

This seems to be a valid question, why isn't anyone answering it?

I'd like to do the same thing, so my site URL shows up instead of

http://www.mondoswank.com/index.php?opt ... &Itemid=45

when someone hits 'home'.

As far as I know this ain´t possible. There are some extensions to modify the URL (this is useful for preventing hacker attacks).

Hello and sorry for my english.
I thing is posible mask all site URLs (into Joomla! 1.5 o 1.0); but this method, for me, is not the best practice.

The tip is very simple, you only need to create a file called "index.html", "pepe.html" or "what_you_want.html" and create a frame. Here is a sample code to insert into file called, for example, pepe.html:

Code: Select all

<html>
<body>
<iframe src="http://www.the_site_to_call.com/index.php" frameborder="0" width="100%" height="100%" scrolling="auto">
</frameset>
</body>
</html>
When you access, for example, at your "http://www.your_domain.com/pepe.html" all your Joomla! site is loaded into an iframe.

Now, you can to navigate for all the Joomla! site and the URL in browser navigator is alwais the same "http://www.your_domain.com/pepe.html"

This one is basic; but when this one works, then, you can try to use other tips for "hide the path than is showed down of your browser navigator", or, "block the right click of the mouse", or, "protect versus manual URLs than can to broke the frame navigation", etc

I have no idea why people want to do this think, but if is only for "stetic questions or you don't like people can read the full URLs" this one is not a good idea. ¿Security reasons?... mmmmm, is posible; but to do this one is a problem with "search engines".

In Joomla! i don't know about ways than, by extension, can help us to "mask URLs".. there are ways, by extension, than can help us to use "more shorts URLs"... using "SEO or SEF URLs"

Hello,
I have a similar problem,
I have to make a temporary site for a charity project, but it has to look profecional.
The problem I have is that it is a charity site and has to be cheap so to buy a domain name for three months is not possible. I have a domain name aviable but it is not the same as the site name.
Is it possible to use this frame Valc talks about to mask the real sitename?
If so, could someone help me to make this work.

I have tried to make a new index.html but as soon as I try to acces it with a browser it becomes unfindable and the browser gives a 404 error.

Thnx in advance,
FJBoogert

Hello, :)
Yes, you can to have a domain called "www.domain1.com" and other called "www.domain2.com" and create an iframe into the first domain than take and let you navigate from the second, and the "main URL" used all the time can to be, for example, "www.domain1.com/pepe.html"

This ones is true only when you read the URL into the "main navigation field"; but, for example, when you move the mouse into the frame then is posible than you can to read the "domain2.com" URL.

The security tip, if for you is not importat the indexations problems than this one can ocasionate, is give navigation permissions only inside the iframe and only let's work directly one URL: "www.domain1.com/pepe.html" (no more, no less).

In this case, when an user "copy and paste" another URLs or automated access try to do the same (for example, using domain2.com URLs directly), if every thing is configured right, they only can found responses as type "Forbidden".

Try to hide/mask the rest of URLs, for me, is a very bad practice (and using Joomla! can to be a "hard work") because you consume a lot of time and resources, users "lost in usability" and "hide/mask" the "destination URLs" can to generate confusions (for example, i can to thing perfectly than you are a trying to make me "spoofing" or "phishing")

The iframe, only for security reasons and if for you is not important indexation, must be used versus "bad boys automated/manual attacks" if you:

* Does not lets him to broke the navigation into the frame
* Does not lets him access directly to the Joomla! site

The iframe, for example, does not protect you versus intrusions than can be executed directly from Joomla! (like the security bug found into Joomla! 1.5.5 and earlies)

Now, if you have no money for to buy a domain, for example, you can to take a free subdomain (i remember sites like dyndns.org) and if you have no money for to buy a host, then, i remember is posible found "freehosts" (no alwais is a good idea; but is posible) or than there are sites like zoneedit.com and free GNU/Linux or UNIX SO than can help you to "put online sites from home"... but, is a litle bit the same "ADSL conection" or "energy 24 hours consumed" is money to pay.

I hope something can help you.

Thanks for the explanation!
If i understand correctly it is not possible to rename the shown URL to something completely different.
for example "www.realname.com" and I want to change the output of the entire site to "www.fakename.com"

so am I correct that an Iframe can only combine one domain name to another and show one of those domain names?

I hope this explains what I want/try to do.

yes, "fakedomain.com" is the same than "domain1.com" and into this place, you only needs to have a file called "pepe.html".. then "http://fakedomain.com/pepe.html" can load into an iframe the "www.realname.com" (the same than "www.domain2.com") and into this place you need to have a "Joomla! site" (all folders, files or extensions for Joomla!)

The content of the file called "pepe.html" than you have into your web folder of the "www.fakedomain.com" needs something like this one:

Code: Select all

<html>
<body>
<iframe src="http://www.realname.com/index.php" frameborder="0" width="100%" height="100%" scrolling="auto">
</frameset>
</body>
</html>
When we access to "http://fakedomain.com/pepe.html" really we are navigating indirectly from "www.realmane.com"; but, the URL is alwais the same "http://fakedomain.com/pepe.html" (you can to navigate the "realdomain.com" and the main URL never change into the "main navigation filed".
Well, you have do it.. you are using a "fake domain than have no a Joomla! installation"; but this one is only true whe you are readind the "main browser mavigation field".. if you push right mouse button over link, image, or take a look to the "browser destination URL", then, you can to read the "real domain name", and a say than if you want to hide/mask this one maybe can found "tips" like:
* hide estatus bar:
http://javascriptkit.com/script/script2 ... tus2.shtml

* right click protection:
http://allwebco-templates.com/support/S ... tclick.htm

Etc, etc, but, to do this last things is, for me, a very bad idea, because, you can generate confusion, users can lost in usability, you can consume resources and time and you NEVER can to stop people with a minimus of ideas to "take the real domain mame"
..well, they can to read tindirectly the real name, but for me, this one in not a problem if they can't access directly to the "Joomla site" or they can't to broke the iframe.

I hope to be more clear this time, my english is no good jajajajajja
