Failed to move uploaded file to media directory - SOLVED

Post by ladyrider12 » Thu Apr 03, 2008 2:25 pm

Hi, I have upgraded to Joomla 1.0.14 ever since upgrading I get the following error message when trying to install new components, modules, & mambots, everything is writeable. Failed to move uploaded file to /media directory

Also, in my community builder version 1.1 it will not let members upload their avatars. I am thinking these to problems are related.

Please, help this error is driving me nuts. I have uploaded the files again for the install and this didn't help. I have searched this forum for answers and everything should work. Any suggestions. And where is the safe mode everyone keeps talking about?

Thanks, Tammy

Hi Tammy,

Just double-check if everything really is writeable, not only by you (your username), but also by the web service. Try changing the media directory to permission 777 and try again, just to be certain.

If it works then you can tighten the permissions accordingly.

Odd. Are you able to upload other modules/components?

I must be blind. You mentioned you couldn't upload components & modules.

Can you check if your $mosConfig_absolute_path in configuration.php is correct?

Also ensure that the "tmp" directory is 777 too.

Hi,
The tmp file I made sure is writeable 777 (which I hate all the 777 turned on) and the absolute path reads as follows:
$mosConfig_absolute_path = '/home/random25/public_html';

Still receiving the same error. :(

in your Joomla! back end, go to System -->System Info -->Permissions Tab

Check that all the directories listed are writable. next, check your ownership settings. It's possible that the file system doesn't own these directories.

Ok, I checked that everything is writable. But, where do I look for the ownership settings?

You can check ownership with an FTP client. Ownership is a server related issue which instead of uploading files into your FTP user group, it uploads as http:http. When you upload Joomla, the user name that you upload with (usually your FTP user name) is the user name and user group that 'owns' the files that it uploads. Some servers have difficulty when it comes to Joomla!, as Joomla! is a script and wants to install files as http:http (user:group), instead of as your FTP user and group.

I'm not so good at explaining this problem. Read this post: http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic ... 82253.html
For more information.

Hi,
I read over the post you suggested and it seems like everthing is set like it should be. I also have been reading other posts and everyone seems to be suggesting to alter the php.ini file. But, I cannot seem to fid this file anywhere. Do you happen to know where it is located?

php.ini is not a file you can access. It is an apache system file for your server's configuration-and only your host has access to it. In some cases your host will give you shell access to the server, but because of the security conflict this presents, it's not very popular.

Thanks for your reply.
I wrote to my server support and they said everything was the same as before and they suggested I erase the script and start over. Well this isn't an option for me. This site is to huge and too much is at stake for it. Last thing I want to do is take 1 1/2 years work and scrap it and start all over. This site is in front of some very important people I need to resolve this issue not start all over. So any more suggestions?

Just a thought:

I'm thinking, make a copy of your entire database, copy your files and directories into another subdirectory, upgrade that subdirectory to Joomla 1.0.15, point this 1.0.15 subdirectory to the copied database, and test again?

Hi, Everyone,
Thanks for all your help. I have solved this. After the unthinkable suggestion from my server. I decided to try to re upload my files a different way to overwrite them. Originally I FTP the files via "auto" in the transfer type. Which I have to say I have never had a problem with before. I changed the transfer type in my FTP software to Ascii and reuploaded all of Joomla files. This seems to have corrected not only my problem with uploading components but also my problem with user in Community Builder being able to upload their photos. It kept asking them to select a file. I kind of figured these two problems were related. Guess I was right. 8)

Thanks again for everyone for their suggestions to help correct this problem. I hope this will help someone else with the problem I just encountered. The site I was having problems with was:
http://www.UnofficialBillyCurringtonFanClub.com

If you like what you see help me out and sign up as a member for free and see what I did with CB and joomla.

Thanks Again, :D :D :D

sorry dudes, i'm moving to drupal.

LOL, well I did and I'm back,

Drupal isnt the answer.

I re-uploaded my Joomla in ASCII mode and now have NO PROBLEMS UPLOADING & INSTALLING ANY AND ALL EXTENSIONS, MODULES, MAMBOTS, PLUGINS, you nameit, ITS ALL GOOD

I personally prefer Joomla over Drupal because it feels more personal [shrug], and yeah, Joomla sites are quicker to load.

Just as another suggestion for someone checking this post, sometimes you will get this message if you should have 'unzipped' the install file first, i.e. you think it is a normal zipped template file to install, but actually the zip file you have contains the zipped template file IN ADDITION to other stuff. So always check the contents of the zip file. Hope this helps somebody.

hi

the way i fixed this problem is this:

i deleted the php.ini(in the administrator folder),and copied into my desktop for a while. This file php.ini was very small ,only "register_globals=off".then i was able to install the template i wanted. After that i put the same php.ini file back into the administrator folder.

I saw the same error when installing components

Reminder:

Code: Select all

Warning: move_uploaded_file() [function.move-uploaded-file]: Unable to move '/tmp/phphK1J9H' to '/home/mysite/public_html/media/com_joomlapack-1.1.1.zip' in /home/mysite/public_html/administrator/components/com_installer/admin.installer.php on line 187
And the joomla installer returned:

Code: Select all

Failed to move uploaded file to /media directory.
I tried changing the media folder to 777 - no joy.

I went to the cpanel / filemanager (hosting back end)

I renamed the media folder to mediaold and then went to create a new media folder...

And got this error:

Code: Select all

/home/mysite/public_html/media failed because Disk quota exceeded in /home/mysite/public_html
Click! (that is a light bulb turning on)

I allocated more space for this user/website and viola!

SUCCESS! PROBLEM SOLVED!

My installer is as happy as a clam (presuming of course that clams can indeed achieve happiness).

Peace & Joy,

If you're still having problems installing the component. Maybe you can try this ALTERNATE way of installing the component. It worked on my VirtuaMart installation problem.

1. Unpack the contents of the package.
2. Upload the files to /media or /tmp folder using your FTP client.
3. At your Administrator-> Installers->Components page, specify the direct location of the /media or /tmp folder (depends on where you uploaded) in the “Install directory:” field. A complete path is already specified there, you’d just have to edit the last part.
4. Click Install and you’re finished.

You need to check:

1) Directory permissions
2) Directory OWNERSHIP
3) Disk space
4) You have a good install package (what component are you trying to install?)
5) With the developer of said component
6) That you can install something - try a different component and see what happens.
7) What error message do you get?
8) Have you run Joomla Diagnostics?
http://extensions.joomla.org/component/ ... Itemid,35/

Try those things and let us now.

Hopefully this will help some of you who still are having problems:

I was trying to upload a custom template I made, and when I added two images to the templates 'images' folder it would no longer uplaod. I kept getting the same error, "failed to move uploaded file to media directory". None of the above advice and suggestions helped me at all to resolve the probelm. Eventually I figured out that my 'php.ini' file was restricting the maximum upload filesize to 2MB and my custom template '.zip' file had just gone above this limit with the addition of the two new images. I simply opened my 'php.ini' and changed the upload filesize limitations and everything worked!
