Rockbridge and phpbb3 bridging and embedding

Post by tofm2 » Mon Oct 20, 2008 7:39 pm

Hello

I recently downloaded and installed Rockbridge forum bridging solution from there http://www.rocketwerx.com

this is a standalone appication allowing mirroring users between phpbb3 and Joomla. THis works quite nicen apart for the following point.

My site (see signature) needs to graphically embed its forum inside the Joomla cms (you will see in signature site this seems to work) and i am not perfectly satisfied with its answers, for one particuliar good reason:

For the graphically embeddable site, the only solution I have found was to embed phpbb inside of a joomla wrapper. seems nice, see signature, but in that case, navigation inside the forum pages, although working perfectly fine do not give a single URL inside my navigator adress bar.

Ouch, if this is not the case, this is bad for SEO, it will be displayed for robots as two independant sites.

does someone have a clue for solving this problem

P.S. this site is an old one who worked perfectly with joomla 1.0.15 / phpbb2 with Mehdi's bridge.. Since I have done the upgrade for joomla1.5.7 and phpbb3 things are a little more complicated and I am waiting to find acceptable solutions before attacking the theme..

I am actually looking for the same thing Just curious, is there an easy way to embed phpbb3 into Joomla after it's been bridged? My only goal here is to have my Joomla header above my forum installation so it looks like it's a part of the Joomla site and not a standalone. Any help would be appreciated

difficult, as far as I am concerned, I did not find the correct way to proceed to the embedding altough the bridging is very easy

Honestly I have tried quite a few bridges for 1.5 JFusion, Rokbridge, and the two SMF bridges.

None of these solutions works the way almost everyone wants (1.0 series bridges with cb support almost perfect integration)

Rokbridge is nice but it's stalled and won't be finished if ever I wager.

JFusion is the best one of the bunch it works and works with almost every popular forum and well. Frameless and Wrapper modes don't work at all or in SMF's case well imo. It might get there. This is the correct way to tackle the huge problem with Joomla not having a decent forum integration.

There are two SMF bridges for 1.5 only that work but have their own oddities like no documentation or the like.

You aren't alone though as most people interested in using Joomla have come across the extreme lack of forum support. It's almost dire since without a solid forum solution (fireboard and agora do not count) Joomla is half useless.

The developers really need to implement a supported solution in the next big release. Throw in with a popular forum solution and make it work even if it's something like phpnukes phpbb. They can make changes that integrate one or more forum brands into the CMS. Honestly without this happening the 1.5 series is a slower counterpart to wordpress.

Personally I love the system but I use the old 1.0 series for any site that is community based be it gaming or other areas. I would advise using the older series since you will have less of a headache getting everything up and running on top of having such things integrated.

-Community Builder (not fully 1.5 bad sign)
-Seyret Video (not 1.5 native)
-PUarcade (not 1.5 native)

Quite a few items aren't native to 1.5 and even if you try legacy it's slow and still causes issues here and there.

Good luck with your project and check out JFusion because they might have a frameless option or wrapped in the next big version for phpbb3.

I agree with you on all the points that you make

and add Coppermine intergration for galleries and now our base wants us to look at Video intergration like infinovision or phpmotion

I know it can get very "never ending" but when you market is is 17 to 24 and they are all facebook and myspace savy …we really need to keep up with the rest of the world!

and at the moment we have a stack of great ideas all over the place but no one can talk to one another! There should be some sort or forum / Gallery / Community board / blah blah etc etc standardisation commitee!

I think joomla needs a total rethink for 2009 and or Ver2.

Some people are saying this is why they are leaking across to Drupal. Any updates on the rockbridge thing? How does Joomla.org integrate with phpbb3?

Actually, after thinking about it for a few days if I ran this open source game I'd role the best and brightest ideas and people from wordpress and phpbb3 into Joomla and just have "bulletin board" and "blog" as core options to tick. That way they would also be integrated not just into the user functionality, but would also be visually integrated as well.

Customers rarely go looking for "just a blog" or "just a website" or "just a forum". They want it all in one package, seamlessly integrated and powerful, with all the bells and whistles of any one of the packages listed above, AND 10 thousand beautifully designed themes/templates to choose from. Ultimately the Drupal / Joomla thing will probably decided along these lines.

Well you can try new Jfusion 1.1.0 http://www.jfusion.org/ now and also use it with fullymoddedphpBB "Extreme with Board3 Version 2 Release" http://www.fullymoddedphpbb.com/viewtop ... f=68&t=354 with ROK templates (inheritance override). That can not Drupal do :D

Thats power isnt it?

Thanks for that, I quoted your comment on MacRumours where there is a bit of a Drupal v Joomla thing happening. Any mac users would be welcome to comment there.

What does the "Extreme" stuff do? I think I've got Jfusion working, but the template I'm using needs a LOT of work. Are there "Jfusion" templates?
