Use FTP and go to /configuration.php and open in an editor.
Look for:

Code: Select all

var $force_ssl = '1';
And change to:

Code: Select all

var $force_ssl = '0';
And save. :)

Hi Ankamarun,

Don't forget to inspect the permission of your configuration.php, make sure it is not 777.

See Cthree post for a good explanation on setting your configuration.php to the correct setting http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?p=106901

set the mode to 440 or 644 (read-only to everyone but you) depending on your webhosting environment.

good luck

Is there any way that I could do this with the jumpbox version of joomla? I've also locked myself out :( fingers crossed! any help would be amazing. thanks in advance!!

Heres the error:

--------------------------------------------------------
192.168.56.101:3000 uses an invalid security certificate.

The certificate is not trusted because it is self signed.
The certificate is only valid for jumpbox.

(Error code: sec_error_untrusted_issuer)

# This could be a problem with the server's configuration, or it could be someone trying to impersonate the server.

# If you have connected to this server successfully in the past, the error may be temporary, and you can try again later.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have tried making an exception but it failed miserably and im clinging on for dear life as this site is for my dissertation project! If anybody out there can help i'll love you forever. Thanks.

Hi,

thank you for your solution, I add just that the right configuration.php is ( easy for the most ,but not all user like me ) under /joomla and not under /cgi-bin, and yes, you have to change the permission before upload the corrected file, :D

Ok, If you do not have a properly setup SSL certificate for your own domain, you can not enable SSL in Joomla without problems. If you have any doubts about your certificate being set up properly then you need to ask for help with proper setup from your host and/or the certificate issuer.

Many hosts have a "shared" SSL certificate for the server your on (shared hosting usually) and these shared certificates may not work with Joomla or work properly with Joomla. It depends on several factors beyond your control. They are usually wildcard certificates for the server your hosted on and not any individual domain on the server. Even these shared certificates need to be properly added and enabled for your site from the site domain c-panel to work.

If you want to use SSL, then purchase your own certificate either through your host or a 3rd party ssl provider and install it (or get it installed) properly on your site.

The answer about how to fix enabling SSL manually is posted above by Steve. After uploading the fixed configuration.php file, check with ftp and make sure the permissions are set on the file to 644.

If your still having issues with site access then check the rest of the configuration.php file for any https path info and change any back to http.

Isn't Jumpbox a virtual setup with preinstalled Joomla that is intended to be used for development and demonstration?
Why would you want to enable ssl on that? Anyway, follow Steve's advice to reset the configuration.

Well as they above said changing back the config file allows one to log in to the admin area only.. but the site's Login module still stays stuck trying the ssl. Any help with that?

It seems the 'Force SSL' setting sets sth in some other file as well (not just configuration.php), but I haven't found any change in the mod_login files :(

Thanks guys, you saved my day. This is how I did it:
1. FTP to website
2. download /configuration.php, then delete it at the server
3. locally edit configuration.php, change value of $force_ssl from '1' to '0'
4. upload configuration.php to server
That's it!

Well good for you that it was enough. I had to install a new login module to be able to make the frontend login accessible as well.

SSL is normally the security for payment transactions. as most of the discussions on ssl refer to this we now consider it an administration issue and not a joomla security or server security issue.
there is a fine line between the 2

Hi guys and thanks a lot for tons of useful info in this forum.

I'm fighting the same problem as Gabore.

After ftp-ing the config file with '0' instead of '1', I now can access my site http://www.figu.no, and I can log on to back-end.

But I CANNOT logon to the front end of my site... :-( Any ideas what I have to do?? It looks like Gabore found the solution by installing a new logon module, but where do I find that? And how do I do it?

Any feedback would be great!

Thanks!

FiGu

EDIT;

I found a solution myself. I back-end, go to Extensions/'module manager' and create a new module. In the list of modules to chose from, pick login. Publish the new login module, and you are good to go.

Hi,

I'm having the same problem with my website: I have enable force SSL for the administration part and cannot access it anymore.

I have already tried changing the $force_ssl variable to 0 without success.

Im I doing something wrong, or is there another solution?

Thanks for your help.

All you need to do is change the following line in the configuration.php

var $live_site = 'http://your.domain.com';

to

var $live_site = 'https://your.domain.com';

Afterwards you can force https......

You may also leave the $live_site variable blank.

Hi,
I do have the same problem, went through all tips above, sorry, no help...
see also my post at Administration:
http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f ... 9#p2358209

Than I took again working "configuration.php" (from an other website) and edited it,
overwrote all db etc. settings from the broken one.
- still no login, but the website is back again, - but also no login from the frontend there is possible.

Checked from XP and Linux, no difference.
Any idea?

Hey guys! I know this is a very old thread, but I'm having the most bizarre problem... I set my site to Force SSL on the entire site... by mistake of course since my certificate is not ready yet, and I cannot acces any part of the site anymore, I can modify the configuration.php file, but it makes no difference what so ever, I set the force ssl to '0' but it will try to go to the HTTPS anyway... and it's driving me up the walls! can anyone confirm if there's any other place where I should change this? or maybe a cache that is remembering the old setting? or something? I even pulled a configuration.php from the backups, and it still doesn't work... I'm loosing my mind here!

thanks everyone!

cheers!

Hey trickert!

You are right, I burned my fingers too. I had that same problem and could not solve it on any smart way describe here.
Go via ftp and save your files local.
Get via PHP the data from the db.
Erase all, even the date in the db and do a fresh set up.
It sounds bad, but this is much quicker than anything else, and helps saving nerves.

A tip: Always run your site localy too for testing purposes, plus always keep a 1:1 copy as ZIP for save before you do changings. When everything runs fine just then load it up.

Sorry, no better news...
