Warning: Failed to move file! Error. Unable to upload file.

Post by ggcluca » Sun Jan 02, 2011 7:41 pm

I successfully migrated my site to a new server; when trying to upload/install any file I receive the following error:
Warning: Failed to move file!
Error. Unable to upload file.

Any help will be appreciated.

Check your folders to see if they are writable. In the admin backend click on Help/System Info then click on the Directory Permissions tab, and check that all your folders are writable. If you tmp and logs folders are not writable follow the instructions I posted here to fix it;

Thanks for your reply. The folders are unwritable.
I've followed your instruction but I am still getting the same error message and the folders are still unwritable.
Do I have to change some configuration.php parameters?

Does your Host's CP have a one click Joomla install ? If it has then use it and then use Akeeba to transfer your site http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions ... ackup/1606

Otherwise just use Akeeba, by writing the backup.jpa file directly to the server may help give Joomla Ownership.

If they are still unwritable then you need to check permissions and ownership. The folder permissions should be set to 755, the ownership of all files and folders should be the same. If the ownership is to the FTP user then you can try enabling the FTP Layer in the Global Configuration settings, use a valid FTP account for the folder Joomla is installed in.

Your Host may have a Control Panel with a File Manager that can change permissions or you could FTP into your site and use your FTP program to chmod the permissions on the folder.

Thanks!
I took care of folder permissions and ownership (the owner is 501, does it make sense?)
When I try to enable the FTP Layer in the Global Configuration settings:
JFTP::write: Bad response
An Error has occurred! Unable to open configuration.php file to write!

Joomla set configuration.php 444

When Joomla is Owner of the files it changes the chmod then does its stuff and then chmod it back to 444

But with ftp layer set then the file can not be written to.

You would be better deleting your Joomla and trying to install in such a way as Joomla gets Ownership.

Can you upload the Joomla installation zip and unzip directly to your server, from within your Host's CP ?

If you can then delete everything and install that way. Otherwise ask your Host to CHOWN Joomla for you.
