When I want to edit a category/menu/article using direct link (not edit icon) I receive this error message:

You are not permitted to use that link to directly access that page

Using the edit icon on top of the page works just fine.

I am routinely getting this error in the backend, and found it appears to be related to how different browsers are caching pages. Of IE9, Firefox, Opera and Chrome, only Firefox and Opera work properly with Joomla 2.5. I would be pleased if others could confirm this.

Actually, I'm getting this message as well, and in Chrome. If I delete the item and make a new one it goes awy, so that leads to suspect that it is something about the item.

Found this solution on a blog somewhere..

Replace your direct link layout=edit

e.g. <a href="<?php echo JRoute::_('index.php?option=com_xxxx&view=setaddress&layout=edit&id='.(int) $item->id); ?>

to task=setaddress.edit (what ever your subcontrollers name is)

so it will look like

<a href="<?php echo JRoute::_('index.php?option=com_xxxx&view=setaddress&task=setaddress.edit&id='.(int) $item->id); ?>">

I don't get that error with Opera or Firefox. With IE 64-Bit 9.0 I had to keep clearing the cache of the browser before I could reedit an article or module.

Definitely related to browser cache my end.

I use Chrome almost exclusively. Get it constantly - total pain in the butt. I wish someone would fix it.

Are you using system plugin Admin Bar Unlocker ?
It is easy to forget to close an element with it so this error may occur because element is locked.

There seems to be a simple thing with Cache atleast to me, I only use chrome, but eitherways, I've found that if I open chrome devtools and check the options to disable Cache while devtools is open, Everything works fine, but once I close devtools or Uncheck the "Disable cache" the issue returns.

I get that when editing users also... =)
And I can not edit users or articles,

If i'm thinking straight, i tick the box for the content i want to edit, then click Edit, that works.

Happy to be able to confirm that there appears to be a cause for this.

Recently many of us have started using much more complex .htaccess files... me included.

It would appear that ExpiresActive On is the cause for this error... both front end and backend.

Therefore if you have this in your .htaccess (as good as it is), you should comment it out for now.

Simply put # in front of each line that refers to ExpiresActive

I do not have ExpiresActive On in my .htaccess but I have recently started getting the error "Error You are not permitted to use that link to directly access that page (#58)." every few minutes using Chrome and Joomla 3.2.3.

Easiest way for me to clear the error is to empty the browser cache, although logging out and back in also clears it.

Unsure of the cause or a better solution at this time.

I'm seeing this issue as well. If the joomla session cache is cleared, the problem resolves temporarily. But it eventually returns.

Looks like the problem has followed over to 3.3.3. I'm having the issue in Chrome, but not Firefox. No one else has mentioned this, but when I get that error after clicking on my name in the user panel, I can no longer create new modules (haven't tried articles or any other items). When I click New, then click the module I want to create from the list, it just takes me back to the module manager screen. It doesn't bring me to the new [whatever] module screen.

This works, I had to remove the full block <IfModule mod_expires.c>

Hello i'm new to this error had some problems myself here's my solution on joomla 2.5.28
I tried accesing plugins modules articles and got the error.
www.domanin.asd was not working
domain.asd work's perfect with expires active on.
Hope this will help you out.

If you do not want to remove <IfModule mod_expires.c> block from your front site,

Try to use this .htaccess in your /admiinstrator folder:

<IfModule mod_expires.c>
ExpiresActive Off
</IfModule>

Worked for me

To add to discussion: I got the same message.

Circumstances: previous day I made and edited a new article. Today first thing when logging I updated Joomla to the lates (minor) update. After that the check in icon (lock) appeared by side of title of the newly added article that I finished the previous day. When trying to edit the article I got the message. Clicking the edit button does not help.

Solution: I logged out, then logged in again, the problem was solved.

Possible explanation: Joomla update produced some sort of inconsistency in Joomla session. The session should be killed and recreated by logging in.

The same thing happened to me after Joomla prompted me to upgrade to 3.4.7. I deleted a tag and thought that was causing the problem, but logging out and in again did the trick.

I just upgraded my site to Joomla 3.4.7 and began getting this error too. i've never seen it before and have used Joomla for several years. My .htaccess file doesn't contain the ExpiresActive On statement (it's the absolute default that came with the install). I was able to fix the problem by logging out and back in, but if a better solution comes along I'd like to know.

I haven't had this problem since Joomla 3.4.7 first installed itself. The first time I logged out and in, Joomla fixed itself. Hopefully this will be the case for you as well.
