I have the same problem. Hard to find anyone talking about it.

Let me see if I can put this in steps for clarity.
1. I have a menu with all published articles under it. Simple enough.
2. I decide to unpublish an article. (back end, i am administrator)
3. I went into article manager and unpublished the article and hit save.
4. Back to the page on the front side, and my article is still there with different css that has blue lines for separators.

When it first happened, I just thought it was a code glitch of some sort from bad article html, or some unknown css problem. Now that it has happened twice, I am either missing something obvious, or there is a bug. I can't believe it would be that rare. Seems like a simple enough function that would be repeated by others.

BACK STORY:
When I first installed Joomla 1.6, and entered my own articles into the default "home" menu, all was fine. When I wanted to get rid of those first test articles I unpublished them. Once I unpublished, my article was still there, but had a light blue border of sorts. It's more of blue separation lines. I also notice that there was a difference in the css that was picked up.

My first solution was to just delete the default "home" menu, and just create a "welcome" menu with the items I desired. All was fine. Never solved the actual problem.

Now I am on a different category, and find myself needing to unpublish another article. Same problem has occurred again. I want to keep the article under the current category to possibly publish later, but I have once again gotten the same problem.

Here is how I am presently getting around the problem. I created a new category that I am not using. I think I called it "future articles". Then I went to the article that I had unpublished. I changed the category from the live menu category to the "featured articles" category, and the article finally disappeared. I am still interested in hearing about others with same problem, if there is a solution, if this is a bug, or if I am just missing some radio button.

cool - but I think I found the problem
if you choose "deleted" articles category when on the article manager - then all the articles that have been deleted are in there and then you can empty the trash and then they disappear (don't forget to clear out the system cache)

Well the idea of unpublished is that you don't have to delete them.
Is your template using a layout override for content? Check in the html folder.

Sounds very strange, I know you mentioned that you have been logged in and logged out, otherwhise I would have suggested that you are logged in as the he same user that is the author, then you get tha similar display. Could it be that Joomla still thinks you are logged in, perhaps try with another username just to verify that it is visible to all other users, or with another computer if caching is the problem

I am using Artisteer as well. Perhaps there is something there. As was noted, to delete the article was not the preferred choice, I was to hold unpublished until later. So far a new unused category has been my best solution.

The css changes in the deleted article. I first saw it as blue lines, but began to realize that the css of that particular article had altered in some way. If I can figure out what the default css was, maybe there is a clue there.

On a hunch I opened a new document in Artisteer hoping that the default css would have blue lines top and bottom, but not the case. Do the blue lines remind you of any template that exists? At least there is a work around for the time being. I don't know that I logically buy that the problem is Artisteer, but then again, I am not a programmer so much.

Why would unpublishing an article change its css? Why would it show up at all?

Something is screwy.

Just a note, if you are logged in unpublished articles will show with an outline or shaded background or both, depending on your template. Try logging out.

web_servant has given the correct answer here:
Just a note, if you are logged in unpublished articles will show with an outline or shaded background or both
Joomla will show unpublished articles on the front end with a blue border / background if you are logged in with publisher priviledges. The non-logged in user (or the registered user) will not see the articles, though.

It can be confusing, but the clue is the blue border / shading.

There's nothing to do with Artisteer.

You can set the .system-unpublished css class to whatever you want.

I've set

div.system-unpublished, .system-unpublished * {color:#aaa;}
div.system-unpublished {border:dashed 1px #aaa;}

on template.css so to show me what is unpublished, but still showing because of my administrator account.

I have the same problem in 1.7 - it doesn't matter if articles are published, unpublished or archived - they still appear in Categories - I've adopted the same solution as others using this page - putting everything i don't want displayed in an unpublished category - it solves the immediate problem but it will become very complicated to administer on my very complex site!

I'm a simple administrator and don't have the skills but it seems to me that this is a serious glitch that needs a solution -

I don't know if this is a related issue but I am also finding the article settings aren't overriding global settings - if, for example, I set "hide intro text" on a specific article - to make it work i have to go to "global settings" - change it to "hide intro" - then switch it back to "show" before the article setting takes priority - is this a bug or is this me being a muppet?

this problem is 100% a bug. one cause of this problem is creating new user groups. i believe if it is true about editors been able to see the unpublished articles in the front end then this bug must be caused by a error in the group permissions.

to be honest, i feel that they have over complicated the user permissions and groups. i feel that this system could have been a lot easier and simple.

Just a couple of thoughts (coming late to the discussion):

Before Unpublishing it make sure to remove the Featured Article identifier.
Clear your browser cache before viewing again.

Anyone work out a solution to this, I tried hiding it in the css ie display:none; but the holder is still there on the cat blog page. Also this doesn't work with archived articles.
I can't see how this is a feature, if it is then it should be optional.
Any help appreciated my customers site is now live.

Hi,

Has the bug that Unpublished pages show in the frontend been resolved? If so, how do I get the solution or patch? If not, will it be repaired in Joomla 3.0? Very important for me to have this...

Thanks, ;D

Hi all
I have also been chasing this problem. I found it only happens if a super user is also a registered user and logs into the front end while logged into the back end.
I have found two workarounds
1. Assign only one user group per user ie only super user but not also registered
2. Trash the articles instead of unpublishing. They can be brought back later if needed.
Incidentally, the unpublished articles are not visible to other users, but nevertheless very annoying.

I recently had this issue where I had users with editing rights who I still did not want to see unpublished articles. I managed to overcome this with a template override and strategically placed in the main article div
Note: This means that even super admins don't see unpublished articles in the front end, which is fine for me, but maybe not something you want- you could add a usergroup check to this to overcome it I guess. Also note: As you're simply not showing the article, it IS being fetched, so it counts towards blog item numbers, etc. Certainly a model override would be a more elegant place to do this but I've never been able to override models successfully- but that's another topic

I had the same problem, unpublished all featured articles and when I (super user ) was logged in, the featured unpublished articles still were showing up. I went in article manager and just un-featured the articles by clicking on the star, works like I charm. You're welcome!

I know this is an old post, but I found the solution to this erratic behaviour.
(it's not a bug, but a configuration issue in the global category settings)

Simply go to the categories menu and click on the settings icon. In the settings pop up window go to permissions and take a look at the permission settings for the offending user group. If for any reason you have set "Edit State" and "Edit own" permissions in the category to "allowed" then that user group will be able to see (but not necessarily edit) unpublished articles in that category. Annoying. Best is to leave all default category permissions as they are (Inherited) and only change access/edit/edit state rights individually in each category. I hope this helps.
