Free JoomlaStarterKit local Joomla web server and templates.

Hey I package Xammp & Joomla 1.0 Distro I called it The JoomlaStarterKit you can read more about it at

This local web server works for windows only at this time.
We are working on an Apple version in the future.

Its just one simple zip file you just unzip JoomlaStarterKit.zip in your c:/directory.
This creates a folder called JoomlaStarterKit.

It does not install any registry files or make any system level changes to any files at all.
To uninstall just delete the JoomlaStartKit folder in your "c:/ JoomlaStarterKit" and it's all uninstalled in one shot.

Whats included:

Fresh install of Joomla CMS 1.0

All of the Joomlalabs.com GPL Templates

ApacheFriends XAMPP (basic package) version 1.4.14

I installed the JoomlaStarterKit to C:\Joomla on my Windows XP Pro machine.  I then ran the setup_xampp.bat file.  Installation appears to go fine.  Next I ran appache_start.bat and mysql_start.bat.  Everything looks fine still.  I next go to http://localhost and I get the pre-made startup page.  However when I click on "Link to Local Joomla CMS" I get the following errors:

Warning: main(C:/JoomlaStarterKit/htdocs/joomla/includes/version.php) [function.main]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in C:\Joomla\htdocs\joomla\includes\joomla.php on line 77

Fatal error: main() [function.require]: Failed opening required 'C:/JoomlaStarterKit/htdocs/joomla/includes/version.php' (include_path='.;C:\Joomla\php\pear\') in C:\Joomla\htdocs\joomla\includes\joomla.php on line 77

If I click on "Link to Local Joomla Administrator" I get similar errors:

Warning: main(C:/JoomlaStarterKit/htdocs/joomla/includes/version.php) [function.main]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in C:\Joomla\htdocs\joomla\includes\joomla.php on line 77

Fatal error: main() [function.require]: Failed opening required 'C:/JoomlaStarterKit/htdocs/joomla/includes/version.php' (include_path='.;C:\Joomla\php\pear\') in C:\Joomla\htdocs\joomla\includes\joomla.php on line 77

I will admit, I am a total newbie and so this starterkit in the faq section.  However I seem to have managed to screw something up in the installation.  Any help would be appreciated?

I too get an error when accessing the local site or admin section:

-----------------------

Warning: main(C:/JoomlaStarterKit/htdocs/joomla/includes/version.php) [function.main]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in F:\htdocs\joomla\includes\joomla.php on line 77

------------------------

I have it installed on a jump drive.  while not a complete newbie, i have been unable to determine the problem.....

Any suggestions.?

I am using a recent download " JoomlaStarterKit Update 1.1 "

Jester, Im not anywhere a programmer but move the program to c:\joomlastarterkit rename your C:\Joomla to C:\joomlastarterkit this shoulld take care of it.

this line below is telling you its looking in your C:/joomlastarterkit folder for all the program to be there.
Warning: main(C:/JoomlaStarterKit/htdocs/joomla/includes/version.php) [function.main]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in
this is what I found to be my problem, its looking in this area for programs.
hope that helps.
best wishes

That doesn't work though when you start up projects as i do by using a jump drive.  This pointer to the c: driver should be a relative path so as to avoid this.  The problem though is that i could not find where in the code that this is occurring.  As an example, today my jump drive on this PC is my F: drive.  This evening when i move the jump drive to my dev pc, it'll be the L: drive.

You were exactly right.  I renamed the directory to c:\joomlastarterkit and it worked perfectly.  I would advise that the readme is changed because it states that:

Step 1: Unpack the package into a directory of your choice. Please start the
"setup_xampp.bat" and beginning the installation. Note: xampp makes no
entries in the windows registry and no settings for the system variables.

Obviously it needs to be a certain directoy

Wow 6 hours to download, 3 hours trying to solve the problem of failing to open stream. I had the folder of starter kit in a folder of starter kit so it was joomlastarterkit/joomlastarterkit/folders. I moved all the folder into the main and deleted the empty folder and i can access the joomla page and move around freely there,

BUT I CAN NOT ACCESS THE ADMINISTRATION PANEL. I am using admin/admin but it keeps coming back to the login page
anyone have any ideas. Help Please

I just started using mambo about  two weeks ago put up two websites, then deleted everything and moved to joomla. I am trying to learn as much as I can, mostly from reverse engineering, but the transition from moving oil drilling rigs to computers is quite a change.

lingo
are you using the link in xampp?
go back to xampp look for

http://localhost/joomla/administrator/
link just below the black square box for JOOMLA
click the link
use
username admin
password admin
hopefully this helps

gecko
Im not sure If your good at html I think you should be able to open the spalsh page under xampp, and rewrite the link from joomla to look into your jump drive instead of c:\ same for admin link
Like I said earlier Im not a programmer, hope this helps
best wishes

Well I finally got it figured out. My zonealarm or virus scanner would not let me into the panel. Once I shut everything down I could get in.  Is it possible to build the website in this kit then upload and install it to my server?  I am on dial up and I keep getting booted during the building process. This is one cool application in any case.

Thanks Brian Exactly what I needed.

Unfortunately there are no paths that point to C: in the splash page.....  There are a couple that point to localhost, however I do not think that has anything to do with my problem..

A little update on my progress in using JoomlaStarterKit. 8)

Because i made my first homeinstallation of mambo with Xampp i noticed that you should secure the Xampp directory and MySQL with a password ( i am not sure if ppl can come and snoop around on you local machine if you don't )
So naturally i wanted to make the JoomlaStarterKit secure as well.
so i went to    http://127.0.0.1/xampp/    clicked on Security on the left of my screen  then just under the statusscreen there is this link  http://localhost/xampp/xamppsecurity.php  witch takes you to the Security console MySQL & XAMPP directory protection  screen, here you can add a password for MySQL and a username and password for the XAMPP DIRECTORY PROTECTION (.htaccess)
Well now if you would like to protect the MySQL installation don't forget to change your Global Configuration in Joomla first.
Under database you will find MySQL Password: section where you should enter your password before you secure your MySQL installation because if you first enter the Password in MySQL and update that you won't be able to log onto your local Joomla installation.  ( naturally i found out the hard way  :-[ )

If you messed up by doing it the wrong way round you can still use c:\JoomlaStarterKit\Xampp\htdocs\joomla\configuration.php use a editor to change it, find $mosConfig_password = ''; and enter your MySQL password inhere between the ''

Hope this is helpfull to the Newbies (like me) out here. ;)

This is not necessary if your are not on a network and the internet is not connected. Xammp is installed like that because it is meant for developers to test your work. Since your are running it on a local host just for testing you dont have to secure it. But if you plan to host it then you better follow those steps.

Hello all

I have been working on a few projects I haven’t check the forums in a few days.

Ok let’s get started.

Alright guys and gals

Please watch the videos first before installing it will be as clear as day after you watch them threre  like 20 min total.

Go to howtomambo.com under MamboStarterKit it’s the same server as JoomlaStarterKit.

Link to Videos:
http://www.howtomambo.com/cms/index.php ... Itemid=116

I'm making a lot of changes at Media 65 and HowtoMambo.com to welcome in JoomlaLabs.com our Joomla support site.

I have not had the time to make a Joomla version of the videos but MamboStarterKit
Videos cover what you need to get the JoomlaStarterKit up and running.

Technotes:

Don’t rename C:\JoomlaStarterKit.
This will break the JoomlaStarterKit install.

Don’t Use the Bat files to start your servers or any bat files.
This will break the JoomlaStarterKit install.
Use the xampp-control.exe this is a control panel for the server system.

To Start JoomlaStarterKit
Find C:\JoomlaStarterKit\xampp-control.exe

Double click it xampp-control.exe
Windows POPS up.

To start services
-------------------------
Start apache
Start mysql

Minimize the xampp-control.exe windows

Open your browser to http://localhost/joomla/

And you’re all set.

Stop your services
-------------------------
Maximize xampp-control.exe

Stop apache
Stop mysql

Exit the servers off.

The Xammp system comes with a lot of tools installed.
As listed in the first post.

In time I go over some of them.

The JoomlaStarterKit scope Is to start you off with solid server solution
Which Xammp provides.

The JoomlaStarterKit distro is for local use only hence a development server not a production server.

It will get you up and running so you can test out Joomla Components,
Templates, Modules and Bots.

With out having to find out what is a php.ini file or an http.conf file is
or how to assign multiple IP’s to a BOX.

Installing a multiple copies of Joomla is easy and simple.
You could run as many copies as your hard drive will fit.

See next post for the how to.

Now that been said this JoomlaStarterKit distro
has all the tools under the hood to install almost any PHP CMS or PHP Script as you like. There limits but I have installed and use hundreds of Scripts on the Xammp distro it’s solid but it’s not the Holy Grail.

The right tool for right job we all have a lot to learn and this is a great stepping stone. I work on all OS’s and install and compile for scratch and I still test and develop some apps on the xammp distro.

File Sizes for Dialups:
I Understand that files are large to download even if use another server distro it
still be 20MB to 30MB.

I'll look into torrent network server latter on for you dialup users.
Someone could post it to a torrent and help that would great.

Ok I have to back to slaving on my other projects I hope this helps
And if made a few spelling and grammar mistakes well I’m not John Steinbeck.

Cheers and Enjoy I’ll do my best to stay atop of things.

:D
Installing multiple copies there is a clean copy of Joomla in zip form.

Path c:\ JoomlaStarterKit\htdocs\
Files named: Joomla_1.0.1-Stable.zip

Now unzip it and name the folder myJoomla or whatever

For this example I’ll name it “myJoomla”

So your zip tool makes a folder named “Joomla_1.0.1-Stable”

Just rename it to myJoomla.

Now you have your new Joomla install ready.

Well you need a few more steps.

Now the browser address to this install would be http://localhost/ myJoomla /

But we need to take few steps to make it happen.

We need a new database.

You should use myphpadmin
Web address http://localhost/myphpadmin/

But to make this short I’m going to do this low-tech but easy way.

We are going to make a database by hand this is crazy but it works like clockwork.
Please note that its not professional way but it will get the job done for a newbie.

Change directories to this path c:\ c:\ JoomlaStarterKit \mysql\data\

Your in the data container for Mysql database server.

Just make a windows folder and call it “myJoomla”

Your done!

Start Apache and Mysql thru the Xammp control short> see videos
At http://www.howtomambo.com

To install mambo open your web browser and type http://localhost/ myJoomla /

Now you see the Joomla install wizard.

Go thur the wizard till you get to database part.

Host Name:
Type>: localhost

Mysql User Name:
Type>: root

Mysql password:
There is not one set to make it easy.

Mysql Database Name:
Type>: myJoomla

Mysql Table Prefix:
As is

You will see three check boxes:

If you want sample data check the box install sample data.

Go thur the wizard.

Pick an easy password to start. Like admin

now you get to the end.

Your going to have to delete the install folder in the myJoomla folder.

Path c:\ JoomlaStarterKit\htdocs\myJoomla

Inside look for the "installation" folder delete or rename it.

Open your web browser and type http://localhost/ myJoomla /

Like Magic your done with a new install.

This could be done 50 times just don’t name the folders or database the same.

To answer your next question.

“a live (web) installation?”

Yes and no.
You can transfer your templates at will to your live web server via ftp.

For the full Joomla transfer it a little tricky because of the new server.
1.  OS type
2.  file permissions
3.  the configuration.php paths
4.  the database data

but yes it can be done.

Hope this helps,

Cheers,

Brian

okay, since all this new info has come out, i would again like to ask someone if they can email the zip to me.... I really would like to have this, unfortunately i'm stuck on dial up and it wants to take anywhere from 4 to 5 hours to download and i get booted too often for that to accomplish anything... this morning i tried downloading it again, had only about 45 minutes left and got booted ..... someone PLEASE email me the zip attachment or something or at least give me an idea if there's any way for me to get it without having to spend that long trying to download it, cuz if that's my only option, i'll never get it

brian,

have you tried making the folder as a tar ball(.tar.gz)?

The reason why I zip is most windows users not know what a tar.gz is and dont have the software to gunzip the file.

In this case I have to go with majority not the minority.

I will be looking into different ways to package but zip is easy to use and most people have a handle on it. Plus it can be scanned by most antivirus programs on windows.

The dialup is a problem that can’t be solved easily you can’t email a 40MB meg file.
Most accounts can take only 5 to 10 megs.

Ok this is only temporary and special case I can’t be doing this all the time.

I have made a directory at http://www.howtomambo.com/dialup/

There you will find a folder with (50) 1.4MB RAR files.
RAR is a compression format that can break large files into a lot of smaller files and then put them back into one again.

The software is not free you have to pay but they have a free trail that you can download and use.

http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm

once you installed the software.
now you download all the files to a directory on your system.

You will have 50 files selected all and right click and then extract to JoomlaStarterKit
This will make a folder called JoomlaStarterKit now the program will ask you overwrite files called JoomlaStarterKit click yes to all now its going to take time
So give it time.

Once done you will have a folder called JoomlaStarterKit and inside the folder a file called JoomlaStarterKit.zip take that file and unzip it in your c: directory and make sure that when it finished unzipping  the folder reads like this.

C:\JoomlaStarterKit\
A lot of files inside/

Your looking for an exe file called xampp-control.exe
Double click it to start your services apache and Mysql
When finished click stop on both services then click exit.

How to view Joomla open your browser to http://localhost/joomla/
To admin the CMS type in http://localhost/joomla/administrator/

Username: admin
Password: admin

All your files are stored in the c:\JoomlaStarterKit\htdocs\joomla\

Ok I hope that this good deed gets me a seat in heaven.

LOL cheers and good luck.

How to view Joomla open your browser to http://localhost/joomla/
To admin the CMS type in http://localhost/joomla/administrator/

Ah, Brian, you have made it all too easy!  :D  I have had apache, MySql, and PHP running on my desktop PC for over a year now, but I had not installed same on my fairly new wireless laptop.  I was not looking forward to doing that task.  You made it all a snap!

Please do let us know when you have a Mac version.  My previous attempts to set up a webserver there have repeatedly failed.  :'(

Thank you so much.

Hi all I’m back for a few seconds

Replies

Login and antivirus.

If your running panda or some other type of antivirus / firewall software.

Firewall:
getting error which all happen in some case.
The Kit servers use ports 80 for the web server and 3306 for Mysql.
So if you have these blocked well there are some errors.

Antivirus:
Put the distro on zip for a lot of reasons but one of them was you can scan the
Zip for virus’s of Trojans.

If some antivirus have problems I cant help that but we can work on a solution in the future. As soon as I get the new help system running at Joomlalabs.com.

I use AVG and Kerio firewall kerio is no joke. It’s a Cisco on a PC.
It has a lot of features.

The login info was posted on a post above.

Dial up.

Hi cronlin
I typo URL . the right is  http://www.howtomambo.com/dialup/

Look for the joomlaStarterKit folder.

Hi Tim_Olaguna

Thanks.
The Mac’s version. I have install it but yes it tough to run out of the box because
Of the root account setup and shell command to start the services.
it be a few months on this to find the easiest way start the system.

Mac OSX for one runs Apache and PHP if turn-on the service but you have install Mysql and your CMS.

Which may be easier in the end ;)

Ok have to go new sites to finish see you soon.

Cheers Brian.
