Installing Joomla 3.2 RC with MS SQL Server 2012

Post by rkonopka » Wed Nov 06, 2013 6:26 am

I was hoping that the issues I was running into with 3.1.5 with SQL Server 2012 would be address in 3.2. However, unlike 3.1.5, Joomla 3.2 will not even install correctly with SQL Server 2012.

Has anyone been able to use Joomla 3.1.5 or 3.2 RC with SQL Server 2012?

I know the recommendation is to use MySQL, but I've been using SQL Server for many years for production level software and I am quite familiar with its tools. Since Joomla is supposed to support SQL Server, I felt it was fine to use it.

But if Joomla is not really going to support SQL Server 2012, then drop the support. Because right now this is terrible.

Managed to get 3.2b2 to run on MSSQL Server 2012, so 3.2RC shouldn't be a problem.
Can't test it because I can't get MSSQL Server 2012 running after I stopped it.

Thanks for the response.

What edition of MS SQL Server are you using? Did you have to do anything special to get 3.2b2 to install correctly?

Have you tried installing the Stable Release of 3.2.

I was able to get the installation to finish, but I needed to modify the joomla.sql file in the installation\sql\sqlazure directory. Specifically, I needed to change the table name reference on line 2,744 from:

Code: Select all

INSERT INTO [__update_sites] ([update_site_id], [name], [type], [location], [enabled], [last_check_timestamp])
to

Code: Select all

INSERT INTO [#__update_sites] ([update_site_id], [name], [type], [location], [enabled], [last_check_timestamp])

I also needed to change the CREATE TABLE statement for #__viewlevels so that the field size of rules specified a size of 4000 instead of 5120 because the max size allowed by MS SQL Server is 4000.

Code: Select all

CREATE TABLE [#__viewlevels](
	[id] [bigint] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
	[title] [nvarchar](100) NOT NULL DEFAULT '',
	[ordering] [int] NOT NULL DEFAULT 0,
	[rules] [nvarchar](4000) NOT NULL,
Making the above changes allowed the installation to complete. However, after removing the installation directory, whenever I try to access the site either the main site or the admin section, I get the following error in the browser:

Error displaying the error page: Application Instantiation Error

I've check the configuration.php file and the database settings are correct.

Any help would be appreciated.

Already fixed with #32555 https://github.com/joomla/joomla-cms/co ... 31778be0bc

Can't get MSSQL running anymore, need to reinstall, again!

PS Managed to get it installed again. Confirm your findings: Application Instantiation Error. Both front-end and back-end.

Thanks for letting me know that the modifications I figured out have made it into a commit. I like the switch to using max instead of 4000.

However, I was a little confused about your comment: "PS Managed to get it installed again. Confirm your findings: Application Instantiation Error. Both front-end and back-end."

This sounds exactly like what has happened to me. The installation went fine after making the necessary modifications. And then when I renamed the installation directory, I get the "Application Instantiation Error" message on both the front-end and back-end.

I then searched for this error and found several references to it occurring with MySQL and there were various ways to fix it, but I did not find any reference to MS SQL. I did check the configuration.php file and made sure that the database settings were correct. I also verified that I was able to access the database and log into it using the credentials that are listed in the configuration.php.

Unfortunately, I am at a loss of where to look at next.

The same thing happens to me. I run multiple Joomla 3.1 and 3.2 installation on my local server with Wamp server 2. Everything was find. But i upgraded Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, so i decided to upgrade to the new version of Wamp too. And as soon as the upgrades of Windows and Wamp was done, i could'nt access to the website back or front, i got this too :

" Error displaying the error page: Application Instantiation Error"

In my case, despite this error, i can install a new fresh Joomla Installation, it works fine. But the multiple old installations got the error message after Wamp upgrade. And if i uninstall Wamp and re-install it, the brand new Joomla installation won't work anymore and i would get the error message above.

I don't understand what is going on. Configuration.php file is OK, Apache, SQL, PHP modules seems to be OK. SO to make it simple, everything was fine until the upgrade or the re-installation of WAMP.

In my case 3.2.0.b2 is fine, 3.2.0.rc and 3.2.0 are the problem.

Hi,

I have the same problem: "Error displaying the error page: Application Instantiation Error"
(Bug still exists but will not called after fix #31604.
Joomla\libraries\cms\error\page.php line 34
$app = JFactory::getApplication();
JFactory::getApplication() <- called with "$id = null" therefore error appears see
Joomla\libraries\joomla\factory.php line 121

After i rearranged the code as told in #31604 in Joomla\libraries\joomla\database\query\sqlsrv.php i got this error message when i opened http://localhost/index.php:

[Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 11.0][SQL Server]A nested INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, or MERGE statement must have an OUTPUT clause.SQL=SELECT * FROM ( UPDATE [apj_extensions] SET [params] = '{"mediaversion":"a4143a17ec43c9c9c9e802202fc03295"}' WHERE [type] = 'library' AND [element] = 'joomla') _myResults WHERE RowNumber BETWEEN 1 AND 0

I'm using:
MSSQL Server 2012
Apache: 2.4.7
PHP: 5.5.6
Joomla: 3.2 (git version and stable release)

Big Thx,
Roland

Are you sure you applied it correctly? This is adding to an UPDATE. This should only be added to a SELECT.

Edit:
Sry had the wrong repository. Used the offical one not yours :( I try now yours.

I suggest having an affair with linux+mysql. Don't break it off with windows/sql just yet though...play the field and make sure you're happy. String them both along and after a little while make your move in a public area so windows/sql won't make a scene. Than go home and be with linux/mysql and be happy, content, and never feel alone again or deal with all that BS windows/sql made you put up with all these years.

I've been in a committed relationship with my linux OS and mysql for many years, we're really happy together.

That is weird. I used this on J320rc, J320 and J321. Clean installs (no demodata).

Hi,

we are trying to install and run J3.2 Stable under IIS7.5 with MSSQL Server 2008 as the RDBMS.

We were getting the symptoms described above (return to page three of the install sequence) and were able to continue with the installation by applying rkonopka's suggested changes. However, we were then also getting the above mentioned "Application Instantiation Error" message.

Further digging & debugging showed that the function 'processLimit()' in "libraries\joomla\database\query\sqlsrv.php" was mangling the queries. Adding the parameter check that the function 'limit()' in "libraries\joomla\database\driver\sqlsrv.php" has, relieved the "Application Instantiation Error" issue.

However, the mangling continued for more complex queries, ones that had subqueries as well (more than one "FROM"). the reason is that the function 'preg_replace()' understandably gobbles up the first "FROM" it finds, which is probably not what was intended. Expanding the Regex search parameter may be a possible solution, but my quick attempts were not fruitful. I therefore began looking for other ways to emulate the MySQL "LIMIT" function in MSSQL by using CTE's, Temp Tables, etc. They all were also not very fruitful or equally complicated. However, I did stumble across the following MS-Blog entry that I believe solves the problem, at least it is working for me and is more generic in nature than the current solution.

http://weblogs.asp.net/fbouma/archive/2 ... sible.aspx

The meat in my 'processLimit()' function looks as such:

Code: Select all

$start = $offset + 1;
$end   = $offset + $limit;
$query = preg_replace('/(SELECT\s)/i', '\1 TOP ' . $end . ' ', $query, 1);
$query = 'WITH __actualSet AS (SELECT *, ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY CURRENT_TIMESTAMP) AS __rowcnt FROM (' . $query;
$query .= ') AS _tmpSet ) SELECT * FROM __actualSet WHERE [__rowcnt] > ';
$query .= $start . ' AND [__rowcnt] <= ' . $end . ' ORDER BY [__rowcnt] ASC ';
return $query;
I have also applied the changes to 'limit()' in "libraries\joomla\database\driver\sqlsrv.php" as well, just in case.

I am very new to the code change submission procedure here and therefore would like to ask for a peer review and/or recommendation on how to proceed.

Thanks,
Greg

@LostInEurope01: Fixed it a different way, see https://github.com/joomla/joomla-cms/pull/2604

Didn't touch the original query. Just moved it to include all aspects of a query.

The pull request is the way to propose changes. But you also need a tracker connecting your code to an issue.

That must be your environment because either solution should work. The fact you need the combination means something is still wrong.

You might try the 3.2.1 version published for testing the BCRYPT issue.

My solution works on all three of them, not sure what Michael Babker thinks about the solution provided by LostInEurope01. Wouldn't mind the combination, as I do consider the original to be wrong. That is why I mentioned the pull, hoping to see one from LostInEurope01.

There have been some problems in 320 relating to passwords. Maybe try to reset using md5 password. MySQL has a function for it, don't know whether that is available for MSSQL. If not, use a known existing md5 code.

Currently I use:
Win7 Prof x64
SQL Server 2012 Express 2012 x64
Apache 2.4.7 x32
PHP 5.5.6 x32
unoffical php_sqlsrv_55 x32 (none official for 5.5 existing in the moment)
Joomla latest git version

@sovainfo jep I think so too but I don't know what component causing the problems >.< what are you using ?

Thanks for the hint but i replaced the password with a self generatet one and still same message: "Warning You do not have access to the administrator section of this site."

@sovainfo,
I previously failed to mention that I had to also apply your changes as well (pull #2604). It seems it is also necessary for things to work, at least in our environment.

Concerning the code suggestion: IMHO the original code in the 'processLimit()' function is indeed faulty and will need to be replaced before continuing with MSSQL support. Whether or not my (MS-Blog's) suggestion can be used is, of course, a matter for the powers that be to decide.

We are currently evaluating whether or not to go productive (internally) with the J3 + IIS7.5 + MSSQL as opposed to using MySQL. We have a large MSSQL Server for our internal processes and were hoping to avoid entertaining another RDBMS if possible. Due to all that I have seen so far, I sadly believe we will need to fall back to MySQL.

@atvise
I have your problem now as well. Using the following did not help, sadly.
http://docs.joomla.org/How_do_you_recov ... assword%3F

Any further ideas guys?

Understand your fix resolves the issue with the update statement. Don't understand why the update statement occurs and why it would have the limit.

Also, what do your environments have in common, that I don't have?

I tried the $root_user but unfortunately it didn't solve the problem but create an error :(

After I logged in i see this:

Code: Select all

[Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 11.0][SQL Server]Violation of PRIMARY KEY constraint 'PK_apj_session_session_id'. Cannot insert duplicate key in object 'dbo.apj_session'. The duplicate key value is (6pm2jb1mcq4suki146huf9i2v0).SQL=INSERT INTO [apj_session] ([session_id], [client_id], [guest], [time], [userid], [username])VALUES ('6pm2jb1mcq4suki146huf9i2v0', 1, 1, '1386087784', 0, '')
I have looked then in the error.log and noticed these errors :( Btw: I get the same errors when I log in without the root user:

Maybe the solution is something in between ?
