[SOLVED] Google Fonts, Special Characters - Latin Extended

Post by frii » Tue Mar 18, 2014 10:51 am

Hi. I have issue with Google fonts. Well with Fonts in general. My Heading looks dodgy ...
I'm Latvian. We use 33 Letter alphabet
Aa, Āā, Bb, Cc, Čč, Dd, Ee, Ēē, Ff, Gg, Ģģ, Hh, Ii, Īī, Jj, Kk, Ķķ, Ll, Ļļ, Mm, Nn, Ņņ, Oo, Pp, Rr, Ss, Šš, Tt, Uu, Ūū, Vv, Zz, Žž
http://lv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latvie%C5% ... ab%C4%93ts
We usually use utf-8 unicode

If find some neat looking Google Font, with all proper special characters Ā Č Š Ķ Ģ etc.
For example I like this Font called : Lora or Roboto slab
Ok ... I change it
Template Manager - Advanced - Google Font Name - Lora
My headings looks like this -
Šodien gaidāma vētra
sometimes like this
Šodien gaidāma vētra
All the special characters are from some different Font. Even the default open+sans is doing this to me.
Even if I disable Google Fonts, Headings still looks clumsy

Code: Select all

Using Joomla 3.2.3, Protostar
Any suggestions ?

Re: Google Fonts, Special Characters - Latvian Language

Looking at your examples and looking at Lora and Roboto on the Google Font website, I am seeing problems with your italic fonts.

I am thinking that Joomla maybe isn't loading all the other character sets for the fonts? Possibly? Also, on Google Fonts there are additions for Cryillic, Cryillic Extended, Latin Extended, Greek Extended, etc..... I don't know if Latvian or these characters are Cryillic.

Try adding this in the <head> section of the index.php file in your front-end template directory

<link href='http://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family= ... rillic-ext' rel='stylesheet' type='text/css'>

Re: Google Fonts, Special Characters - Latin Extended Alphab

Here In Post I used italics/bold/regular just to visualise the problem reason why I want a different font. In Joomla I don't do any formatting just stock/global formatting.

Cryillic is from Slavic language tree. Totally different looking alphabet comparing to Latin for example Russian alphabet.
А а Б б В в Г г Д д Е е Ё ё Ж ж З з И и Й й К к Л л М м Н н О о П п Р р С с Т т У у Ф ф Х х Ц ц Ч ч Ш ш Щ щ Ъ ъ Ы ы Ь ь Э э Ю ю Я я

Latvian uses Latin as a base (so I assume it's Latin Extended). And Lora is Latin Extended.

I did add your code. But it still uses same different special characters.
So I took a closer look at your code and noticed that there wasn't latin-ext. I decided to try adding it. And guess what. It WORKED.

Thank you Zemplate

Maybe Somebody finds it helpfull.

Code: Select all

	<link href='http://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Lora:400,700,400italic,700italic&subset=latin,latin-ext,cyrillic' rel='stylesheet' type='text/css'>
