Need help with characters encoding UTF-8 / Joomla 3.4.1

Post by christian1972 » Tue Jun 30, 2015 11:03 am

Hello,

I hope I chose the right place for my question.

I need help with my site http://www.diamantlinks.de/

Behind is a Joomla 3.4.1 and the Template Gantry v4.1.29 - Base Theme

The german special characters (ä,ö,ü,Ä,Ö,Ü,ß) are displayed wrong. At a first view it shows the characters correctly but after a reload they are broken. I already looked everywhere... cleaned caches a hundred times... I don't know what to do.

A screenshot where you can see the errors: http://www.webck.de/joomla-utf8/1.png

A web based check showing something about the UTF-8 encoding: http://www.webck.de/joomla-utf8/2.png

phpMyAdmin: http://www.webck.de/joomla-utf8/3.png

The contents of my htaccess: http://www.webck.de/joomla-utf8/htaccess.txt

I use the plugin JCH-Optimize ( https://www.jch-optimize.net ) I already disabled it and cleaned all caches but the errors remain. So it is not this plugin.

When at a first view the characters are ok but are broken after reload... that looks like a problem with the browser cache or?

I would like to add one of the following to my header:
<meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8">
or
HTML5: <meta charset="UTF-8">

But I don't know where I have to got to add a line to my sites header. How can I do that?

I am not experienced enough to get it fixed.

If someone wants to help me I can give all info about it. Just tell me what info you need.

Thank you for your help to get my problem fixed!!

Christian

The problem lies with your template. You can confirm this by temporarily switching the template to one of the defaults - eg protostar and you will see that all the German characters are correct. example http://www.diamantlinks.de/?template=protostar

Sorry I am not familiar with gantry to tell you what you need to change in the template or where but the issue is 100% there.

Dear Brian,

first thanks for taking the time to look!

Unfortunately I see the exact same error when viewing my site with the protostar template.

Screenshot: http://www.webck.de/protostar.jpg

At a first view the characters are ok... but they are broken after a refresh ( F5 ). :'(

So the error seems not to be in the template.

Do you have an idea how I could add a line to my sites head? Maybe via a plugin if there is no other solution.

I had a lot work with that site. It should somehow be possible to resolve this error.

Thanks for your help!

Kind regards,

Christian

OK I see that now.

So we have removed the template as being the issue.

The next logical thing is the cache

What are the cache settings? Start by disabling them all

A meta key that tells the browser to show the page in utf-8 is missing.

Code: Select all

<meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />

Dear Brian,

I made the update to 3.4.2. No change.

I disabled the Joomla cache and the caching plugin (JCH Optimize). Then I cleaned all caches. The problem still remains the same. At a first view it is ok... but after a refresh the characters are broken.

Dear Per Yngve Berg,

I think you are right. maybe it would fix the problem if a could add such a meta key to my sites head. But I do not know how I could add a line of text to my sites head.

Thank you both for trying to help me!

I am close to despair. :'(

It is not missing from protostar and the problem can be seen there

It is also not missing from your template

I think you need to carefully go through ALL the extensions that you have on your site and disable them one at a time - I would start with the plugins.

You should only need to test the extensions that you have installed - not the core joomla ones.

It seems that the caching function within joomla produced that errors. At least for the moment it works as it should be.

Thank you for your help!
