Removal of rogue gstatic TRACKERS

Post by feste » Tue Oct 20, 2015 11:18 am

According to Privacy Badger, the index page of http://nynehead.org contains 3 potential trackers.

csi.gstatic.com
fonts.gstatic.com
maps.gstatic.com

This is a newly built J3.4.4 website and these are not things I have knowingly included. They smell of google to me. Not wanting to do google's dirty work for them, or anybody else's come to that, I would like to disable/delete them.

3 questions.

1. Are the above 'trackers'?
2. Who or where do they originate?
3. Can I disable them without adversely affecting the website?

Even worse, does their inclusion in a 'clean' install mean that Joomla's core installation files are corrupt or have been hacked?

Thanks for any help.

1. These aren't exactly trackers, but in general any external source can more or less track your visitors. Every HTTP request made to these hosts can reveal visitor's IP address to them. Usually though it's nothing to worry about.

2. Fonts.gstatic.com is used by Google Fonts. Csi.gstatic.com and maps.google.com are used by Google Maps. First one is used by Protostar template and the other two are added by googlemap3 plugin.

3. You can disable Web font in template settings. It's purely for aesthetic reasons. Disabling it will slightly improve your site's loading performance. To remove the other two hosts you'd have to disable/remove googlemap3 plugin which would remove Google map from the bottom of your homepage.

Many thanks for the info SharkyKZ. I am somewhat reassured! I think I'll disable the Web fonts - anything to speed up the website! Thanks again.
