How to run & test multiple websites via Xampp LocalHost
Hi everyone,
Joomla 3.4.5
Mac OX 10.10.5
Xamp 5.6.14
I'm trying to set up 2 different localhost websites to be able to compare some extensions that i might use on my final website.
There are pretty different from one another and i feel that installing both of them on the same Joomla is a bad idea.
How can i create 2 different Joomla sites on LocalHost ?
As extra info: I installed Joomla via Bitnami installer and don't really know how to set up the Joomla folders manually
Thx in advance for your help.

Re: How to run & test multiple websites via Xampp LocalHost
Under the directory where the domain localhost is pointing to (i.e., the directory htdocs; this directory should be under the directory where XAMPP is instaled) create one directory for each of the sites.
For example, for the first site, create a directory site1 under the directory htdocs. Joomla! for the site would be installed under the directory htdocs\site1. The URL of the site would be localhost/site1.
Review of the following documents would be of help:
https://docs.joomla.org/Xampp174

Also with xampp you will also need to change a few settings.

Hi imanickam & Webdongle,
Thanks a lot for your answer and the links.
When creating the folder "site1" (Xampp/htdocs/site1) should i copy all the files that where originally created in "htdocs" folder to this new "site1" folder ?
Regarding the "site2" folder, should i install again Joomla 3.4.5 ? If so can i do it via Bitnami Install or better with Joomla Manual Install files ?
Any need to create a new Mysql database with Xampp for "site2" ?
Sorry for all those questions but i'm a real newbie.

Joomla! should be installed in each of the directory where you want to have as site.
As for Database is concerned, it is recommended that you use one database per installation of Joomla! for a site.
I would suggest using a manual install as it would give you more insights into what is going on during the installation. In fact, the manual installation is very easy.
Hope this clarifies your question.

Re: How to run & test multiple websites via Xampp LocalHost
- Create a new folder in drive:/xampp/hdocs
- Unzip the Joomla full package zip to the new folder
- Point your browser at http://localhost/your-new-folder
It is a good idea to name the database the same as the folder name.
Use 127.0.0.1 instead of localhost in the 'Database Host' field.
Again I say you may need to edit some of xampps settings. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2237 ... 0#32921670

Re: How to run & test multiple websites via Xampp LocalHost
Here's how I run about 10 different Joomla projects at the same time in Xampp:
1- create a different folder for each Joomla site you want.
2- download and install Joomla in each folder. I normally use the folder name for the database name, to avoid confusion.
3- install what you want in each Joomla site.
4- That's it.

Hi guys. I'm installing 2 joomla websites under XAMPP just like OP. I'm having the same questions that he did. The above question wasn't answered.lee_m wrote: When creating the folder "site1" (Xampp/htdocs/site1) should i copy all the files that where originally created in "htdocs" folder to this new "site1" folder ?
Also, if I should copy all the files, are there any settings that need to be changed?

Re: How to run & test multiple websites via Xampp LocalHost
The answer depends on whether the first site is already created or not. If the sites are not created, create two folders under the directory htdocs, one for each site. Each site will have its own set of files. So, you have to unzip the Stable Full Version of Joomla! in each of these folders. Joomla does not share files with another site.rnikey wrote:I'm installing 2 joomla websites under XAMPP just like OP. I'm having the same questions that he did. The above question wasn't answered.
If the first site is already created in the directory htdocs, for the second site, create a new folder under the directory htdocs and unzip the Stable Full Version of Joomla! in each of that folder.
If a site is already created in the directory htdocs, there is no need to move it to a separate directory unless warranted. If this is done then some of things such as the tmp and log file folders have to be changed to reflect the location. Review of the document https://docs.joomla.org/Moving_the_site ... irectories would be of help.
Hope this clarifies.

Re: How to run & test multiple websites via Xampp LocalHost
Thanks for the quick response. Bitnami Joomla installer created a default website and I've since done an akeeba restore from an akeeba backup from siteground. At the moment I'm still amazed that it all works. I'll look follow your link and decide if I want to move it to another directory.imanickam wrote:The answer depends on whether the first site is already created or not.
