Joomla 3.7.3 install corrupt download file problems

Post by hansju » Tue Jul 04, 2017 5:32 pm

I have succesfully updated two sites, but two other sites reported an error during the install process telling me that the download was in error, corrupt or had missing parts. Following this, the site hang at 100% and 3/4 read files. No obvious reason for fault.
I forcefully closed the update page and went back to the Control Panel, where the bottom status line indicated Joomla 3.7.3. But, due to the issue above, should I trust that the site is actually updated properly?

For the sites that had problem during update of Joomla, check the contents of the file joomla_update.php that is located in the directory \administrator\logs.

As example, the content of the file should look like:

Code: Select all

#<?php die('Forbidden.'); ?>

As you may notice from the log file, there is one database change.

If you see that the update is complete, still you have doubts, what you could do is to go the screen "Joomla Update", click on the button "Check for Updates", click on the button "Reinstall Joomla core files". This should take care of overwriting the core files.

Note:
- Make a backup of site files and the database content before attempting this.

Hi Imanickam,
On one site the log-file is missing, on the other there is no logged text following the "update downloading file Joomla_3.7.3-Stable-Update_Package.zip".
I have later manually transferred all files (complete v3.7.3) via FTP to the two sites in question. But, as you point out, there is also an db change, so will re-install the core files later today.
But, my question is also why this happened in the first place ;)

Imanickam,
The re-install of the core files solved nothing, it came up with the same error. Will provide a screenshot a bit later (from another pc).
Although the image below is from a Norwegian language install, the identical problem occured also on a site in the English language.

Recover using your backup and use your browser to download the backup file.
Then
either
ftp the update file to /tmp and go to Components >>> Joomla update ... and try the update again
or
Components >>> Joomla update >>> upload & update tab ... upload the update file and install it

Hi,
I see what you say, but do you have any idea why this happened in the first place?
Will try your instructions later today or tomorrow, and let you know how it worked out.

Webdongle & all,

Issue solved.
Keeping above suggestions in mind, but without reloading old backup, I did two other things.

On the first site, the database needed a repair due to an issue between old 3.7.2 and the faulty 3.7.3 version. Following this I deleted all present contents in the /tmp/ folder, and re-installed 3.7.3 with 100% success.

On the second site, the database check indicated ok, so I deleted all present contents in the /tmp/ folder, and re-installed 3.7.3 with 100% success.
To me this indicates that a non-empty /tmp/ folder caused the issue, but don't ask me why

Namely Leo, something I did not know was an issue to be aware of. You learn as you go ;)
