@mandville In those case I try to use one poster per topic approach. If we can add to Release FAQ item with information about this error and with information how to set error reporting throw configuration.php then there will be fewer such topics.

Not sure if it helps.

I had my site on 3.7.0. Server had a lot of security and i had to export to local machine via akeeba backup. I deployed and then updated the site. Then i uploaded the site contents without the installation folder and uploaded manually the database. It threw me that error 500 Application Instantiation Error.

To try anything else i placed the same installation inside a folder. Deployed and ran correctly.

I had to wipe the site and then re deploy it and voila no more error 500 Application Instantiation Error.

I'm open to questions if i can help you.

I had the same issue on a couple of sites which I upgraded to 3.8.0 from 3.7.5, after running the update the site is locked out with an "Application Instantiation Error".

On the first site I was able to fix using myJoomla.com as the site had been added here, the site's database schema didn't match the version so that service provided a tool to fix and voila all was well.

On this other site it wasn't on MyJoomla.com so I have no way to run that fix and can't access the backend to run it from Extensions>Manage>Database>fix so I'm currently unsure how to go about sorting this one?

Just as a follow-up in case this helps, I managed to get the site accessible again by using FTP to upload all files from a 3.7.5 install so that the db would match up with the filesystem.

I then noticed some extension updates hadn't run properly so ran them again and ensured there were none outstanding, then I ran the Joomla upgrade again and it went flawlessly this time.
