SEO and changing the site, what's the best way?

Post by Forsh » Wed Jun 06, 2018 5:49 pm

What's the best practice for upgrading a website but not losing its URL structure? I've done this in the past and just took the 404 hits for the hundred or so broken URL structures, I couldn't map that many URLs by hand. I'm not wanting to do that again, but I don't know if I can get around it this time. Is there an extension that makes this seamless? Does everyone just get a team and spend a week just manually remapping the broken URLs?

I would use a sitemap extension to create an XML sitemap of all current links at the website.
Load that XML file in a spreadsheet and only use the existing URLs (put in 1st column) and remove everything else.
I would add the new links in the 2nd column

In the past I would create 301 links (with existing links from 1st column and new links from 2nd column) and put it in a .htaccess.
However these days I would use Joomla's Redirect Manager, so I import the old + new links in the database table of the redirect manager.

Exactly. Download a program like screaming frog and generate sitemap.xml and use the file to match old URLs for new ones

Changing the site is Realy not a good choice. Do the SEO according to the Google algorithm for 3 or 4 months to get targeted audience on your site. ;)

This discussion started two months ago. During this time the OP has not replied if the responses have helped that person decide what is the "best" path to follow in managing their website.

Instead, this topic has become a magnet for all those one-time "SEO experts" whose only intention is to flood the forum with useless "information" or promotion of their products that are unrelated to J! or to SEO.

Rather than allow this problem to continue unabated, can we please cauterise the problem and lock it? I'm tired of reporting the spam that this topic has attracts. Please lock the topic.

So much worrying about seo when their sites rank on page 5000 with a specific search phrase.
