Joomla free e-commerce extensions for nonprofit organisations?

Post by NR2016 » Tue Aug 28, 2018 4:00 pm

Hi,

I'm new to the forum and writing from a charity, as we use Joomla as our content management system for our website, and we were wondering what are the best options/Joomla extensions, for having an online store on our website. I've seen that there are some free extensions (we would need to use a free version, as we receive limited funding for our small charity), but it was getting quite confusing, so wanted to know what is the best thing to do for a nonprofit organisation needing a free Joomla online store extension for their website?

Any help or advice would be really appreciated,

Thanks,

You need
An payment gateway ... e.g. Paypal, world pay , google pay etc.
A shopping cart
Most shopping carts will connect to a Paypal account but many require a plugin to connect to other payment gateways.

How elaborate you want to be depends on what you're selling (number of products etc).

There are quite a few free e-commerce/cart type components available. Some examples:

https://extensions.joomla.org/extension ... hoca-cart/

https://extensions.joomla.org/extension ... -commerce/

https://extensions.joomla.org/extension ... mshopping/

Since they are free take them for a test-run on a copy of the your site.

Others available on the JED: https://extensions.joomla.org/extension ... ping-cart/

Note, depending on the the payment method you will be using, you might be up for transaction fees (for credit card transactions - how much depends on the payment gateway(s) you use. As a non-profit you will need to keep that in mind. However, I expect that cost is absorbed in the product prices mostly.

Thanks for your replies - really kind! However, I am quite new to this, so please could you explain what I would have to do first/ how we can go about getting a payment gateway and a shopping cart? How easy/difficult is it for a novice to do?

We are selling the standard charity merchandise - wristbands, T-shirts etc., but currently doing it all via eBay. Therefore we would like to be able to a implement a free payment system for our fundraisers/supporters, through our website.

Many thanks

You create an account with Paypal https://www.paypal.com and link it to your high street bank
You try the shopping carts (on a test site) from https://extensions.joomla.org/category/ ... ping-cart/ Then install the one you like into your site and connect it to your Paypal account.

You might want to use Worldpay (or another) instead of Paypal. But as you use ebay then you probably have a Paypal account.

If you want to test VirtueMart then there is a pre-configured Joomla with VirtueMart package available complete with sample products so you can give it a try. VM is free, and the PayPal payment plugin included is also free.
Install the package just as if installing Joomla - get it on http://dev.virtuemart.net/attachments/d ... ackage.zip
