Just to be completely clear, the "normal method" is referred to as the Live Update
As i see that you always refer this method as Live Update please read here https://docs.joomla.org/J3.x:Updating_J ... Method)/en that
Not only is this the recommended method, it is the easiest method of updating the Joomla CMS. Sometimes this method is referred to as a One click update.
So this method referred to as One click update and not Live Update

The documentation is outdated. Please refer to the image I posted earlier in this topic:ImageNow show me where, in Joomla! there is mention of "one-click update".

The image clearly shows two tabs: one is labelled Live Update and the other is labelled Upload & Update.

The terminology referring to some "one-click update" (or upgrade) was used around the time of the beginning of J! 3 to assist people to upgrade (or migrate) from J! 2.5 to J! 3. The documentation that you have referenced does not show the two tabs. These features were added after that documentation was written.

So this method referred to as One click update and not Live Update.
This argument about what the normal or "one-click update" (or default) method should be referred to is pointless. There are two methods (regardless of what the documentation states) and they are: Live Update and Upload & Update. If people want to call the Live Update method the "one-click update" method, that's fine with me as long as they don't harp on about it on the forum and say these things are inherently different. They're not different.

I wouldn't say that I've always referred to the (so-called, erstwhile) "one-click update" as the Live Update. It' splitting hairs to suggest that I have. What I will say, however, is that there are two methods: Live Update and Upload & Update.

At the end of the day, the documentation is not the final determinant. The documentation is outdated and it doesn't mirror what people see on their websites. There are many places where the "documentation" is outdated, ambiguous, confusing or just dead wrong. If you look at the documentation website (and you don't have your wits about you) you will find that it say that one method to update Joomla is to use the Extension Manager (!)

So, just because the "documentation" says that the "easiest method of updating the Joomla CMS ... is referred to as a One click update", that same "documentation" is wrong when it states
if you are unable to use this method ... you can update the Joomla CMS using the install method (i.e. use the Extension Manager).
The document may have been "OK" at the time of J! 3 (when people were transitioning between J! 2.5 to J! 3) and up to J! 3.4 but, from J! 3.5 this document became obsolete.

Now I see where you are getting confused @sozzled. The tab is called 'Live update' because it shows the available update in real time (i.e. it is a live feed to the page. 'Live update' IS A TAB NOT A METHOD.

The method is 'One Click' because the update button is clicked once. 'One Click' is the Update method.

Sorry to be sheldonesq about it but you are confusing the name of the tab with the name of the method.

OK, OK, OK, OK ... we're still splitting hairs.

I don't care if it's a method, or a process, procedure, tab, signpost in the universe or squiggle on a piece of paper. The "documentation" (referred to by @ribo) is outdated because it states that "if the [default] method doesn't work then use the Extension Manager". Can we at least agree on that? That is, agree that the doco is outdated.

The next thing is that I can't see anywhere on my J! 3.8 website(s) where there's a "one-click update". Show me that and I'll surrender.

I really don't give a rat's about whether there's one, two or two-and-a-half methods: there's one component and it's called Joomla! Update. That component has a few options.

Do you see also in joomla backend somewhere to write in update component the method "manual update" as you refered it in a previous post? Other thing is tab and other thing is method.

Unnnggghhhh ... (!)

Let's be clear: To update Joomla you use the Joomla! Update component. Can we agree on that? That's the method. If you want to call this the one-click update method, fine; go ahead, be my guest. But, for goodness sake, please don't harp on about it or querulously quote where I've loosely used some terminology (such as "manual update", by which I meant, to overwrite the entire file system with the decompressed files from the J! distribution kit—a procedure that won't work). I don't need to defend my position or defend what I have written elsewhere in the millions of words I've written on the internet. I did not state that there is some kind of documented manual update method anywhere. I wrote "manual update" because that's what we read a lot here; we read [on the forum] where people write that they've used some manual update. Goodness only knows whatever that means, right?

The documentation (referring to the "one-click update" method) is outdated. Can we also agree on that?

If we can't agree that there's one method (i.e. use the Joomla! Update component, whether it has two tabs with several different options and several properties) then why are we having this hair-splitting argument about whatever the heck the "method" is called?

If we can't agree that the "documentation" is factually wrong, as far as it applies to J! 3.5+, then we're also in no-mans land, bogged down with an academic and pedantic dispute about the terminology that's used within that doco.

If we, so-called, "experienced" users of Joomla are "confused" (or characterised as being confused) is it any wonder that novice users of Joomla are confused?

No this not the method. The component is the tool that give us some methods to update.

Oh for goodness sake, @ribo. Grow up!

Tool, procedure, technique, system, practice, routine, modus operandi, method, formula, process, means, medium, mechanism, facility, tack, approach, way, line, course of action, route, road, strategy, tactic, plan, recipe, rule ... who gives a damn? :p

I asked two questions: you didn't address either of them. :pop

Is there nothing we can agree on or do you just want to have the final word? ???

The link is outdated that's all.

There is a button and you click it once to update ... that is why the documentation refers to it as 'One Click update'. That button is still there so the documentation referring to it is not out of date. Just because one link (in the documentation) needs to be updated does not negate the value of the rest of the documentation.

Not when you base your conclusions on false premisses and try filibustering with irrelevant rhetoric.

@kimhuff: please ignore everything I've written in this topic. I don't know anything about how to update Joomla! Please follow any instructions from @Webdongle and @ribo; apparently they know everything about everything.

I'm giving up on this topic. Apparently we can't agree on anything.

To other people reading this topic: please follow to the letter everything that's written in the documentation. Please don't argue with the documentation. The documentation will answer all of your questions.

Unfortunately, the big truth, for all this, and this is not only now but genneraly, in many threads you want to have the last word even if you dont know the answer in a problem of a user, and if you know the answer you tell it as if no one else knows it here

Hello everyone,

I have made the majority of the questions requested. I left one site to update to make sure I could run the Live Update. I just tried it and unfortunately I am having a different issue. Now when I try to update Joomla I get a...

This page isn’t working
www.domain.com is currently unable to handle this request.
HTTP ERROR 500

I was able to update one of my extensions, but the other one gives me the same error.

I did a Google search, but I am not really finding an answer.

*** UPDATE *** I was able to figure it out. It was a memory issue. The problem has been fixed.

I just read all the comments above. WOW, I had no idea I started such a war. I just want to thank you all for your help. You too @sozzled. Not really sure what the argument was about, but the objective was to help me figure out my issue and that you all did.

Thank you.
