Joomla 3.9 how to update author field

Post by davidascher » Sat Nov 10, 2018 8:41 pm

I was delighted to see that Joomla finally added an "author" field. I was disappointed, however, to find that this information is stored as part of the "metadata" field in the "content" table. I would really like to be able to add author info to all or most of my old articles (going back 10 years or so) so I can make use of the "author" features that Joomla 3.9 now supports. I would think that without some kind of tool to do this automatically or even semi-automatically (it could be based on a category id or on a substring in the introtext or ??) the usefulness of the "author" field for sites created prior to 3.9 is somewhat constricted.

I can identify the author of each of the old (pre-Joomla 3.9) articles but it is not clear to me what the best way might be to modify the metadata field so the part of the string in that field that says "author":"" gets changed to "author":"fred mertz". I imagine I could write a bit of php to go through the database and do this using mysql, but I'm thinking there is probably a more proper way to do this using some Joomla methods.

Does anybody have any ideas where I should start looking for a solution to this problem?

Good question. I may have some thoughts later but I've subscribed to the topic to see what other suggestions may follow. I haven't familiarised myself with all the new features of J! 3.9 (I wasn't even aware of this feature) and so I'm not qualified to offer advice. Cheers.

It would be good if the field was in the Batch process for Articles?

Just to be clear, meta author field has existed since Joomla! 1.5 https://docs.joomla.org/Help15:Screen.c ... nformation.

of course you are correct. I must have forgotten about it being there all this time, probably because the "articles" page lists the "author" as the user who posted the article rather than using the contents of the author field.

I'm don't see how that makes sense. But given how long the field has been around, I guess my question is inappropriate

If you want to show something different than the selected user as author, fill in the author alias field. It will show instead of the user name.

Thanks, @SharkyKZ for clearing up the mystery. When I read

There are many new features in J! 3.9 that I haven't made time to look at.

Of course, Joomla articles have "always" (well, since J! 1.5, anyway) allowed people to tag articles with the name of the author. I always use this feature with any article(s) that I create; some people (evidently) don't. :o

Cheers. 8)

In the site I'm involved with, the content is placed on the site by a small group of people concerned with content. They had never heard of the "author" field - most likely because it is practically hidden in the "Publish" tab and not on the first tab where the editor field appears along with most of the other fields that are important to them... like category, etc. I can imagine some technical reason why the "Author" field would appear on the 2nd tab along with other "metadata" fields, but I cannot imagine from a user interface point of view, why "Author" would not appear in the first tab nor why the list of articles in the backend would display the name of the user who posted the article in the "Author" column. After all, there IS an "Author" field associated with the article. It only gets displayed with the article (in the front end) if on the THIRD tab (Options) one selects "Display Author".

There seems to be a bit of inconsistency, but nobody has seemed to notice or care for all this time.

It is in the Publishing Tab with meta data because it is meta data. It populates the 'author' meta data 'author' tag in the browser header.
