Alternatives to Flickr

Post by borja » Sat Dec 15, 2018 1:08 pm

Hello

I've got to migrate from Flickr to another Photo Hosting. I tried Arista without success. anyone with the same problem? Which are your options?

Any CDN service should do the task you need. Have you tried any of the free cdn sources? You may need an extension to connect effectively. Check out Regular Labs CDN tool https://www.regularlabs.com/extensions/cdnforjoomla

Hello @annahersh,

Could you please explain more about MaxCDN? I'm confused about the discount - it says 25% discount on first month only. Is that correct?

Thank you,
Terry

Hello

My doubt is still alive. What is a CDN? What is the relationship betwen CDN and any page to storage photos such as imgur or googlephotos or similar?

Why can't you store them on your own VPS? You will have full control.

That is something that can be purchased. Dozens of providers (even your current) will offer you space at a price...

... but you can also setup your own.. if your location has enough bandwidth... you know how to setup a server and install appropriate applications.... you can do a lot... but it also involves some cost and effort....

I agree that self-hosting images is the easiest way to go about it, but you could always try Smugmug, who acquired Flickr. https://extensions.joomla.org/extension/cedsmugmug/

well the idea of Flickr was... free as in doesn't cost you.. owner Smugmug now asks people to pay for it... like it asks for smugmug itself...

No it wasn't, not originally. It was Yahoo who came up with the free idea, and look where it got them...
But to be honest, after 14 years (and 12K photos) I'm also looking for alternatives and right now I'm quite impressed with what I'm reading about Piwigo. Either the open source software for self-hosting, or using their cloud service (yes, paid, but less expensive than Flickr pro).
My hosting provider apparently offers Piwigo as a one-click-install*, and there is a Flickr-to-Piwigo plugin available.

Does anyone have an opinion about Piwigo?

*No, I wouldn't dream of using a one-click for Joomla, but in this case...
The fact that an opinion is widely held is no evidence whatsoever that it is not utterly absurd.

True, perhaps Google Photos might be the most appropriate no-cost choice currently.

Indeed, "currently". Google has the tendency of getting their users to test new services and then slapping a fee on them, like their customised translator phrases, which is now available only as a paid service. Photos could be an exception, of course.

Hello
But this plugin is a bit old. Picasa died a few years ago. Any other idea?

Best regards,

The Google Photos plugin? You could always create a code to embed the album and paste it straight into the page as another option.

There are so many such as SmugMug, Google Photos, Photoblog as well as you can certainly consider social media such as facebook, Instagram which is an easy way to post photos. Personally I used Google Photos and photoblog for quite a long time along with Instagram and facebook.

Imgur and 500px are some good alternatives to Flickr. for me personally, I would prefer 500px.

I've been using Deviantart to store photography/artwork for the last 12 years. No issues with file storage and it's free!

I believe Flickr still offers up to 1000 photos in its free option, any more and you roll over into the 'Pro' (ie paid for) option ...I guess if you REALLY didn't want to switch, you could always open a couple of different free Flickr accounts?
