Error 404 in articles in one category

General questions relating to Joomla! 2.5. Note: All 1.6 and 1.7 releases have reached end of life and should be updated to 2.5. There are other boards for more specific help on Joomla! features and extensions.

Error 404 in articles in one category

Post by Barbaraamaro » Mon Dec 17, 2018 9:03 pm

Since last Friday the articles in one category in my webpage are sending to a “404-error category not found”. All the other articles in other categories are working fine. The category with problems is listed as usual in the backend and no change has been done, so I don’t’ know what happened or how to fix it.
I don’t know if it has anything to do with the security certificate, because since I installed it on July, I have been having some trouble.
Many thanks
Barbaraamaro

That all looks OK to me.

Check the access level for the category and Articles and menu items.
Clear your Joomla and browser cache.
Force https in Global config and make sure there are no https redirects in your .htaccess.

We could probably spend a few hours discussing this.

Obviously, there's a problem with a system plugin (probably related to the YT Framework thing) that's incompatible with the version of PHP that you're using. PHP 5.4.45, while it ought to be compatible with the J! 2.5 CMS, is not necessarily workable with the extensions that you've installed. PHP 5.4 reached its end-of-life 3¼ years ago.

Resolving the “404-error category not found” problem may be achievable; it could take us a day, a week, a month or longer. It rather depends on how much the existing website is worth to you and to your business, whether you want to keep the existing website in operation while you undertake a migration to J! 3.x, or whether you're prepared to put the website "offline" while you work on achieving your ultimate goal.

It also depends on your skills as a website designer/developer, your patience and perhaps how much time and money you may need to invest in achieving your final outcome (i.e. the website migrated to, and operating with, the best possible mix of PHP and Joomla to suit your needs). I don't know how to best advise you via this forum about the strategy you might adopt.

I don't have an answer about the “404-error category not found” problem. My guess is that you've changed a menu item or the viewing access for the specific category or the menu item that points to that category. @Webdongle also thinks this is the cause of that issue.

Unrelated to SSL.

When you get to updating then best install Joomla 3.9.1 (without sample data) then use J2xml to transfer your data. You can then install up to date 3rd party extensions. But est you make sure you get the current site in order first.

You could rebuild the site on localhost with wamp http://www.wampserver.com/en/

@Webdongle is right (about using a PC-hosted server environment to analyse and patch-up the broken website) but it's not necessarily related to the “404-error category not found” problem.

I am going to make a bold statement about migrating from J! 2.5 to J! 3.x (a statement that, no doubt, can be argued many different ways). While the process of going from J! 2.5 to J! 3.x is straightforward, it's not simple. Even for people who have years of experience in working with Joomla, migrating from J! 2.5 to J! 3.x is not a "5-minute job". In fact, it's a PITA.

Yes, for people who undertake these kinds of migration activities everyday (and I don't know anyone who does!), it's at least a couple of hours work. The results are often a mixed-bag: sometimes it's not too difficult and sometimes the migrated website is not as "complete" compared to what one began with. Yes, as a general rule, migrating from J! 2.5 to J! 3.x is easier than, say, migrating from J! 1.x to J! 3.x but that's not to say that it's simple.

So yes, as @Webdongle recommends, if you have the time and the patience, spend the hour or so downloading WAMP, install it on your PC, learn how to operate WAMP, make a backup copy of your existing J! 2.5 website, download the backup to your PC, install the J! 2.5 website on your PC, install J! 3.9 on your PC, install J2XML on both websites (by the way, I've never had total success using this extension, but that's just my opinion), convert the database elements from one site to the other, install the missing extensions on your J! 3.9 website, and see how the process works for you. Simple! ;)

Yep it's the 3rd party plugins that cause the hastle ... finding which ones are compatible with J3. Even those that are ... often use different files depending on the version of Joomla. You could use the method in viewtopic.php?f=710&t=956702 but the method that I suggested before is probably best in your case. There is also viewtopic.php?f=710&t=793171 but methinks your 3rd party files will prevent successful updating using that method.

Sozzled,
Many thanks for the answer.
Before the error occurred, I didn't upload anything new, but articles as I do every weekday. I didn't move anything else. It just "appeared" from one day to another!
I just checked, and all the permissions are public.
For me, everything in my website is worth, but yes, I am ready to put the site offline while the migration. I have no skills as a website designer nor developer.

Two points to make connected to this topic and a related topic.

1) The “404-error category not found” problem may be solvable; whether it's worth solving the problem is another matter entirely.

2) Migrating to J! 3.x is not a "5-minute job"; it's not simple. Let's not be in any doubt that it is simple. If it were simple then there wouldn't be any questions asked on this forum. It's a time-consuming and often messy process. While the procedure is straightforward, the process involves detailed planning, patience, compromises, trade-offs and there are costs in these things: time and, possibly, money.

In the related topic—the one that concerns whether your J! 2.5 website is in a fit condition to migrate to J! 3.x—I wrote that you have been fortunate to have kept your J! 2.5 website operable for the amount of time that you've had. In those few cases in the past twelve months where I've been personally involved in working through J! 2.5 "issues" in preparation for migrating to J! 3.x, I have not encountered any situation where the J! 2.5 site did not have problems of one kind or another. The main problem affecting in all of those cases was the situation where every one of those websites had been infected with malware.

I'm not trying to suggest that your website has been compromised; I'm only giving you the benefit of my personal experience.

@Webdongle may be able to fix the “404-error category not found” problem. As far as migrating to J! 3.x is concerned, this is a self-help forum: we can give you the benefit of our advice but only you can decide how you will use that advice.

I know that migrating from one version to another is no easy. I migrated from 1.5 to 2.5 years ago, and because I found it so difficult, I’ve been trying to delay this new migration.
I know that this is a self-helping forum and every time I had a question, I found useful answers and, despite my zero-skills as web developer, I’ve always managed to resolve myself with the help found in the forum.
So, thank you. I am focusing in fixing the error, so I can migrate as soon as possible and by this I hope it will be next week. When doing the migration, I will try as the suggestions given.
Thanks once again for sharing with me you experience.

Migrating from 2.5.28 to 3.9.1 is easy if you are prepared to install fresh extensions and you only want to keep Joomla data not 3rd party extension data.

It can be a little more complex if you have 3rd party extension data that you want to keep ... but it only requires basic skills ...
* Installing Joomla
and
* Editing a few lines in a text file
It just needs to be done in the correct order

You have a lot of Categories unpublished.

Components >>> Joomla update ... offers J3.3.6. Testing an update in the background see if it fails or not.

Addendum
Failed with an error of duplicate in the language table.

Your best choice is too rebuild the site.

So, would this be the best way to update/migrate my site?
