Creating a left side extra menu?

Post by magnuslar » Sat Mar 16, 2019 2:24 pm

Hi!

I'm a Joomla! amateur, administering a website for a small foundation (agslo.se). I'd like to create a left side menu, in addition to the vertical main menu that I have, where submenus are displayed. I use Protostar as template, Joomla! 3.

I can create such a menu by placing it in position-8, but then it moves also the top menu to the right - I'd like it not to move that one, just being to the left of the content.

This site is my inspiration:
https://www.icabanken.se/

Anyone can advice me on how to do this?

(there are a lot of other things that need to be done to our site, this is just one step in an overhaul)

With the Menu in Position-1, it should be above the Position-8, content and Position-7. Position-3 is above the content, but not above the Position-8.

Enable Preview Module Positions in the Options of Template manager. Then you can see where the positions are located by adding ?tp=1 to url.

Hi!

Thanks! That preview of module positions was very helpful!

So, I had the menu in position 3, which caused the problem. However: I also have a header/banner. I would like the header to be on the top of the page. I can do that by placing the header/banner in position 1, and the menu in position banner. Does it cause problems in some way by doing that (since it feels unlogical to place the menu where the banner is expected to be and the menu where the banner is expected to be)?

Or: can I place both in position 1 in some way? If I do that now, the menu comes first, and I would like it the other way around. So if I do, I would need to specify the placement within the position in some way.

Best,

Magnus

Position-1 turn into a Hamburger Menu on small screen devices. You don't want that with the banner.

Hi!

OK, I suspected there was something. So how can I place the banner over the menu (menu in position 1, banner in position banner)?

Or should I not do that?

Swap the code in the index.php of the template.

Code for the Position-1:

Code: Select all

			<?php if ($this->countModules('position-1')) : ?>
				<nav class="navigation" role="navigation">
					<div class="navbar pull-left">
						<a class="btn btn-navbar collapsed" data-toggle="collapse" data-target=".nav-collapse">
							<span class="element-invisible"><?php echo JTEXT::_('TPL_PROTOSTAR_TOGGLE_MENU'); ?></span>
							<span class="icon-bar"></span>
							<span class="icon-bar"></span>
							<span class="icon-bar"></span>
						</a>
					</div>
					<div class="nav-collapse">
						<jdoc:include type="modules" name="position-1" style="none" />
					</div>
				</nav>
			<?php endif; ?>
Position banner:

Code: Select all

			<jdoc:include type="modules" name="banner" style="xhtml" />
