Urgent - Site disappeared after upgrading to 3.6.5

Post by brandonlin » Wed Feb 12, 2020 7:36 am

Hi Joomla experts,

I finally decided to upgrade the site I was maintaining from Joomla 2.5 to 3.6.5. However, after the upgrade, the site disappeared (blank page). For the administrator login, only the main control panel page and the extension install page are still accessible, all the rest goes to a blank page. Is it because my default templates were not supporting Joomla 3.x? If so, is there still a way to resurrect the website? It's a website for a charitable organization, and I should have been more careful. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Best regards

Your website has not "disappeared". If this matter is *urgent*, see viewtopic.php?f=706&t=976319 for advice about how to proceed from here.

The global configuration link also leads to a blank page.
Set the $error_reporting in configuration.php, still all clicks go to a blank page without any additional error reporting.

Probably, and possibly also other extensions, especially plugins, if they were not compatible with Joomla 3.x and they were not uninstalled.

brandolin wrote:If so, is there still a way to resurrect the website?
Do you have a backup created before the upgrade to Joomla 3? If you have, it may be possible to restore the site to your Windows workstation, which runs the Wampserver bundle and then do a trial upgrade with full error reporting first there.

Suggest that you use phpMyAdmin from the cPanel provided by your host and disable all third party plugins in the extensions table. While still in phpAdmin, list the contents of the table template_styles and set the Protostar template as the default by changing the column 'home' from 0 to 1.

There are a few other things that could be done, but try the above first, tell us how it went and ask any questions here.

You should also post the results from the Forum Post Assistant (FPA) by following the link at the top inside the red banner. If you see a warning from Windows Defender, you can safely ignore it because it is a false positive, as mentioned in the information behind the link just after the FPA link.

I am not sure if the way I backup was fine. I made a copy of the entire Joomla installation directory. When I tried to access the backup directory site after the upgrade on the main site, I got Error 500. When I tried to login to the admin page of the backup site, I got the following:

JAuthentication: :authenticate: Failed to load plugin: plgauthenticationcookie
Username and password do not match or you do not have an account yet.

Will do, thanks.

Re: Urgent - Site disappeared after upgrading to 3.6.5

Thank you for the FPA report. There are several challenges here that need to be attended to.

In general, I agree with @toivo: either (a) restore [from a reliable backup source] the file system and the database used when the website was running with J! 2.5.something, or (b) progressively work through the show-stoppers that prevent the site running with J! 3.6.5 by uninstalling anything [that is currently installed] designed for J! 2.5 (e.g. third-party extensions—components, plugins, modules and templates).

The FPA report shows the last-reported error relates to a Form Maker component. I assume this is the component referred to: https://extensions.joomla.org/extension/form-maker/

It may be possible to resolve that error by updating the component (assuming the information I am using is correct), but there's no guarantee. You may wish to discuss this matter on the developer's forum (https://web-dorado.com/forum/form-maker.html).

The site template—the frontend of your website—uses a template developed in 2013. This template is probably incompatible with J! 3.x but, again, that's something you may want to discuss with the author of that template.

Several J! 2.5 templates are installed that are incompatible with J! 3.x and they should be removed (i.e. uninstalled), viz. beez5, atomic, beez20 and bluestork.

There may be other extensions that are incompatible with the currently installed version of J! and, therefore, my observations are only on a preliminary assessment based on the FPA report. Updating the Form Maker extension—component, plugins and modules) may overcome one problem; replacing the frontend template (either by updating it, if an update exists, or by using an alternative template) may address other issues.

I hope some of this helps and ... good luck. :)

Once all issues as outlined by @sozzled are resolved, proceed to 3.9.15, the latest release, January 2020.

It may be better to try that in smaller increment updates; you can find previous releases here: https://downloads.joomla.org/cms/joomla3/

Otherwise, try the Joomla Update component; if you have issues, you can manually install through the "Upload and Update" tab, and download/select the (update package) releases from the above mentioned link.

It will now be a good idea to also update your PHP version to 7.x, as 5.6.x reached EOL 14 months ago (December 2018). Try PHP 7.2 as a minimum, but 7.3 recommended.

In future, when you have a stable installation, install and use Akeeba Backup for your backups - it does the system files and database in one, and very easy to restore (to any server running IIS/Apache/Ngnix and PHP/MySQL/MariaDB/PostgreSQL/SQL Server (whatever your SQL flavour might be).

My advice, next update, make a full copy of the site, and test the update outside the production site. Use Akeeba Backup and Kickstart to make the backup and restore the copy to another folder on the server, or on your own PC using something like WAMPServer. Once ascertained an update is successful, proceed to do the same on the live site.

Thank you toivo, sozzled, and AMurray for your insightful tips and suggestions. I was able to recover my site by disabling all third party plugins under phpMyAdmin. I will continue to work on your other suggestions to enhance the site. Appreciate all your help!
