Error 'Invalid login' when trying to update to 3.9.22

I've experienced an issue when updating from 3.9.21 to 3.9.22 on a few installations using various templates from different sources. The update starts but then hangs at some point during the file update. Not the same point each time. Then it throws an error "Invalid login" (see pic attached). Logged in as a super admin.

Not come across this issue before on previous updates.

Tried uploading the update zip file manually but same error occurs.

As they are all on the same hosting environment I'm thinking it could be a server config issue.

Any ideas?

Disable FTP layer...make sure you have "quota" with your hosting provider are the main tips there.

not using the FTP layer on these sites and they are hosted on our own dedicated server with no quota limit issues. Tested on some unlimited quota accounts just to be sure.

Cleared Joomla and browser caches too.

Probably you should start a new topic and do the FPA (forum post assistant) and post results so we can see everything. Likely Peter will split this off into a new thread anyways, so maybe wait for him to do that and then do the FPA (link at the top of every page).

Agree: the "invalid login" message during the J! update process is sometimes a sign of enabling the FTP layer even if it's [claimed as] not involved in this particular situation. See other cases like this at

People also need to enable the PHP directive allow_url_fopen() (otherwise self-uploading updates will fail).

The FPA report will confirm your webhosting settings and potential blockages.

Thanks for the FPA report; you are using an outdated version of the FPA. Would you like to use the current version of the FPA instead? The current version [v1.6.1] is more complete, more accurate and does not expose sensitive information (e.g. your website name).

Generally-speaking, the value for "live site" should be empty (see viewtopic.php?f=710&t=975412&p=3584729#p3584729). That's not the solution but it's good advice.

Looks like the allow_url_fopen() PHP directive is not enabled. Enable it and then try the update again.

Additinally noting that PHP extension GZip is disabled (listed under "potentially missing extensions); that should be enabled as it is required by Joomla when it comes to installing extensions (or joomla updates from ZIP files). Contact your host about that one.

zip and gzip are two different things

Gzip is used to compress the html output on the server, send that smaller code to the browser, the browser will uncompress and interpret it.
Your current FPA shows "GZip: true"

Zip is used to unzip uploaded installation/update packages on your server.
Your current FPA shows "Potential Missing Extensions :: zip"
You need to install (or enable) zip in your Apache web server.

Looks like the allow_url_fopen() PHP directive is not enabled. Enable it and then try the update again.

FPA shows this is still not enabled.

When i check on MultiPHP INI Editor, allow_url_fopen() is enabled (see attached)

I think FPA is reading the wrong php.ini:

/opt/cpanel/ea-php73/root/etc/php.ini

It should looking at this one on the pic:

/home/************/public_html/*****/php.ini

Not sure how to override/correct that.

Go to System - System Information - PHP Information and check the path of the php.ini file from the line starting with 'Loaded Configuration File' in the first part of the configuration details.

That's not the right php.ini file though is it? My other joomla installs use the one in the public_html folder at the website file root. Something not right here.

That is the php.ini file used by the web server when it runs the Joomla site. Your host should be able to fix the configuration so that the php.ini in the root folder is used instead.

Just tested the update again on another demo installation on the same server as the others which appears to have all the settings set as advised and still getting the error.

The correct path to the php.ini file should be

/opt/cpanel/ea-php73/root/etc/php.ini

Assuming this is EasyApache4 which it is seemingly and than the path is fully correct
