DDoS on Joomla website?

How do you deal with DDoS attacks on your forums and how often does it happen? And in general, how is it done?

Given there's many types and causes of DDOS attacks, what problems are you having (exactly) and how have you arrived at the conclusion it's a DDOS rather than just a normally busy server?
