IP address blacklisted

I don't know where to start with this, but maybe someone can help with where to look.

I have a Joomla site on a shared server, and regularly the server is blacklisting my IP address. A subdomain and another separate domain also become inaccessible. There is plenty of memory and space on the shared server. Joomla and all extensions are up to date.

From the ISP information and logs they have read there are not multiple log-in attempts, other than from my own IP address. The blacklisting happens when I have been working on Joomla for a while, particularly when using an extension like Droptables or even backing up with Akeeba. Everything will be going all right, then all of a sudden access is lost. I have to either unplug my modem to force another IP address or, if I am using it, disconnect and reconnect a VPN to do the same, and I get access again.

My ISP recommended to reset all my passwords and cache (Joomla and browser) which I've done, but it persists. It's like the server doesn't like too many Joomla requests.

I had my site on a VPS for years and it was fine there, but the VPS wasn't upgradeable to PHP 7.4 so that is the reason I switched. The ISP says due to security reasons, they can't whitelist any IP address.

It looks like mod_security or mod_evasive are not correctly configured on the server. It is a fairly fundamental part of shared hosting that you can access your site, and most other hosts manage it fine! If your host can't be a***d to fix it, then time to look elsewhere.

I'd have thought a VPS hosting plan would give you ability to update PHP - especially modern/latest versions.

It sounds like you're reaching resource limits set for your hosting plan or something.

Sorry, it wasn't PHP that the ISP couldn't update, it was CentOS6.

Session path writable NO.. the session path must be writable for trouble free operation. Ask your host to fix this.
You also have some old and out of date third party extensions. A bit of housekeeping is required. Akeeba admin tools pro has a blacklist function. Try disabling it and see if you can login correctly.

The session path is set in php.ini (which I can't access) to /var/lib/php/session. My Joomla configuration is set to /var/lib/php/session, which is correct, so I assume it may not have the right permissions i.e. writable?

Or if I ask my ISP to change it, can it be set to any directory under "httpdocs" e.g. httpdocs/session for example?

Some older third-party extension are disabled. I don't have any extensions on my extension update list that shown as out of date.

I will look into the Akeeba function. I don't use the pro version.

My feeling is that this is still a hosting server configuration issue. Ask them to fix the writable session path and my personal preference is to switch the session handler from database to PHP. Modern versions of PHP are much more efficient at handling the sessions now, than the database server, particularly if your site is busy with unique sessions.

According to my ISP the var/lib/php/session directory is writable with a chmod of 755. But it still shows as not writable in the JPA.

I'm not keen on switching to PHP session handling until this is cleared up.

Writeable to who? if the fpa shows it not writeable then a php script can't write to it can it?

Have you tried loading a copy of this site into WAMP on a local PC where you have control of the server environment. You can replicate the PHP settings from prod and see if the site works correctly. The JPA gives a very reliable result.

Per is right. HAve the Open BAse directive removed ( no need on a well-managd server) and you should be good to go

In regard to Akeeba, I don't think this is the issue. I don't have Akeeba Pro loaded. The message sent to me by the hosting provider upon blacklisting is:

That line was the problem. The hosting provider has removed it, and the Joomla FPA now shows the site confidence as "A+ 100% Joomla! should run without any problems".

I guess I'll wait now to see if there are any further lockouts.
