Author has no access to his own articles before publishing

An author creates an article but, before publishing, he wants to edit it. Let's say, he creates the text and later he wants to add photos, all this before review and before publishing. However, he has no access to the article. He does not see it in article list in category page. Only after published he has access to it and can edit.

In Article Options the author has access to "Create" and "Edit Own". If I change, in Article Options, to "Edit" besides "Edit Own", then he has access to everyone's articles and can edit any article besides his own.

I know there's something wrong in configuration but can't find what. Can anyone please help me?

One way is to give permission to edit, and then hardcode the limit to his own articles, but I presume that's not the best way.
