3.8 update removed multiple components from admin component menu

Post by alston1977 » Tue Sep 19, 2017 7:50 pm

I just updated to 3.8 and now all paid components that I had do not appear to be accessible from the admin, nor are they appearing in the admin components menu?

I had Akeeba admin tools pro and Akeeba backup, as well as JCE and Fox Contact which are all not appearing?

Anyone else have this issue?

Hello, to understand well, you uninstalled extensions in the past and now you see them in components list?

Hello, yes I had them installed and they were all current licenses. There folders are still in the hosting account, but I can't access them from the admin area nor are there any links to their admin areas.

Did you try from the discover button to get them back?

I have the free versions of Akeeba backup and JCE editor and no problems there. It appears strange that the paid versions have disappeared. Most likely is that your update did not complete properly.

This same thing happened to me also. I first installed the 3.8 update on my test site with no problems. All components still appear in the menu. But after installing on my production site, most of my components do not appear in the Components menu. The only significant differences between the test and production sites are that the test site does not use SSL and has caching turned off. Using the Discover button under Extensions... Manage. does not solve the problem.

No, I have not had this issue arising from updating from J! 3.7.5 to J! 3.8.0. I did have this problem—the disappearing components from the menu—about a year or so ago when I updated from J! 3.6.something to J! 3.6.something-else (or maybe it to J! 3.7.something, I can't remember now) and the problem was easily fixed.

The problem usually has one or two causes that reside within the _menu table in the database. The way to fix the problem is, usually, to fix the database records that relate to the "missing" components. This has been discussed a number of times on the forum. Here is are two references to the issue and to the solution: There are probably other references on the forum to this issue. I do not believe this is a new issue arising out of J! 3.8.0. It would also assist others to know what version of Joomla was being used immediately prior to updating to J! 3.8.0; I would bet that websites affected by this phenomenon were probably using Joomla software that's over 12 months old that hasn't been kept up-to-date.

Hey Sozzled, thanks for the links, I'll check them out now. I was updating from 3.7.5 and I maintain the site at least every other day if not every day and I stay up on all software updates.

Here's the fpa:

Thanks for the FPA report, @alston1977, and I apologise if I came across gruffly earlier, commenting upon people's lack of attention to maintenance. I'm pleased to read that you've kept your site up-to-date with each new release of Joomla (which is more often not the case when I read topics such as this one).

Sometimes updates from one version of Joomla to the next don't always go "according to plan" and, sometimes, the database gets itself contorted or internally conflicted. Usually (before rushing off to the Joomla forum to ask the questions) I would recommend making a couple of simple precautionary steps:

1) Run the Extensions » Manage » Discover » Discover feature
2) Run the Extensions » Manage » Database » Fix feature

They may not resolve the problem but, at least, you've got peace-of-mind knowing that you've taken those precautions.

Unless you really have uninstalled those components, check the _menu table (because that's where the menu items "live"). Cheers 8)

No, @ribo. The "do not buy our k*tchens" reference in the FPA is not an indication of a hack; it's what the forum does when it encounters a certain word. I've seen this before on other FPA reports. It relates to the "K*tchensink" plugin for TinyMCE used by JCE Editor. It just so happens that the reference in the FPA is a "bad word" as far as this forum is concerned and it's rendered as "kitchens".

There's no suggestion that the site has been hacked.

That is good to know @sozzled, this site has been hacked and cleaned in the past and we thought we had it all running fine and it seemed to be until this. No worries on your one, I didn't take it that way and was just trying to be thorough in a description of what I've done.

So I updated the menutype from menu to main, still no luck. I've also gone through and checked that the component ID from Extensions --> manage --> manage column "ID" number matches the ID in the table xxxxx_menu in the column "component_id" and they all match up, I didn't find a single one that didn't. They also have a "1" in the published column.

Still I'm not able to see these components in the admin menu under "components". I did notice that under the components menu, "joomla update" is also missing, along with the paid extensions.

That's not a hack ... something to do with JCE

Was the site originally installed with the Joomla full package zip or a 3rd party Template/quick start install ?

Under these circumstances, it's difficult to provide a simple cure-all. My guess (and it's a wild guess) is that the update process didn't run to completion. There may also be issues that pre-dated J! 3.7.5 in your case. I see that the database collation uses "latin1_swedish_ci" instead of what I would have expected to as "utf8_general_ci".

Also using PHP 7.1.7 may be involved (I can't say). The other PHP-related settings (Max. Upload Size: 2M | Max. POST Size: 8M | Max. Execution Time: 30 | Memory Limit: 128M) should be adequate but, if the server was under excessive load, perhaps they weren't?

One possible workaround is to revert to J! 3.7.5 (using a backup taken before the update) and see whether the menu items were missing then. If they're not missing in J! 3.7.5, re-run the update to J! 3.8.0. Like I mentioned before, perhaps this was just a glitch.

While you're at it, you might like to implement SEF URLs with a workable .htaccess file (unrelated to this issue).

I've only updated three websites from J! 3.7.5 to J! 3.8.0—haven't had enough time to do the rest—and I haven't encountered this particular problem (or any other problems, yet) but it's still early days. Someone else may have a better diagnosis and prescription for you. But, if anyone suggests that your website has been hacked and, like you, they're also using JCE Editor, then they should also check their own FPA reports because they'll also find a similar "kitchens" reference if they post their FPA report on this forum, too! ;)

(I wish Ryan Demmler, the creator of JCE Editor, had not unfortunately chosen "k*tchensink" as part of the product :D) Cheers.

@webdongle - the site was originally started about 10 years ago in 1.5, I updated it to 2.5 about 4-5 years ago (can't recall exactly), then I also updated it to 3.x when that became available a year or so ago. But, I did recently use Akeeba backup pro to transfer it from an old VPS to my MAMP/localhost for work, then again used Akeeba backup pro to launch the updated site on a new hosting account. However, this was not an issue until this update.

@sozzle - you bring up a few points, for the database collation, thank you for catching that. I believe I've done that before via phpmyadmin and had it change the collation, is that all that's needed to be done here?

I did have a backup taken just before the update that I can revert to which I'll try and see what happens reverting to it and then doing the update again.

I do have .htaccess set up with sef urls, but Akeeba Admin Tools Pro made the .htaccess file and I always have to disable it for the fpa to run which I imagine is why it's not listed in the results. I rename it to a .txt file.

I'll comment back after I restore it try the update again. Any recommendations on how the update is done this time?

Thanks for info about Akeeba Admin Tools and FPA.

No, I have no "recommendations" about doing the update. Just use the Joomla! Update component as per normal, I would suggest. Firstly, you should just check that your J! 3.7.5 is restored and nothing's "missing"; that'd be the position I would want to start from. Keeping my fingers crossed for you. :)

I have the courage to say that i made mistake with this. No one knows everything but every day learn and something more and this is change. But when someone is ironic because somewhere find him shelf to not be wrong, this is not change for ever as the character is not change.

@alston1977

Having re-read everything it appears that the update did not complete correctly. Suggest you use the backup on localhost and retry the update. If no avail try ...
On localhost
  1. Install Joomla 3.7.5 without sample data
  2. In a different folder (to an empty database) install the backup
  3. Edit the configuration.php (of the fresh install) to connect to the database of the backup and update
Your backup database has now been updated without 3rd party files interfering.
  4. Download and install Joomla 3.8.0 in another folder to another empty database
  5. Install your 3rd party extensions to the 3.8.0 install
You now have your 3rd party extension files with Joomla 3.8.0 files. Edit the configuration.php of those files to connect to your updated backup database.
Using that method will rule out 3rd party extensions from interfering with the update. And it also has the added advantage of ruling out a hack.

Just to follow up, the problem for me was that after the update from 3.7.5 to 3.8 the "access levels" of the components were changed from '1' to a '5'. Using phpMyadmin and changing them back to '1' allowed them to appear in the components menu again.

This post helped me to find the issue:

Thanks for the follow-up @alston1977. As I said from the outset (in msg #7 of this topic), I've encountered problems relating to peculiarities in the _menu table before and there are numerous topics on this forum that address those cases of the "disappearing menu items". Although it's impossible to say with any certainty that this phenomenon occurs sporadically or with religious freqency as a consequence of updating from one Joomla version to the next, these things happen nonetheless. I would also imagine that, with future updates of Joomla, these things will continue to occur again and be discussed, debated and argued over again, too.

Cheers.

AFAIK there is nothing in the update that edits those values.
Have you checked the values in the backup that you made prior to the update ?
If you used a 3rd party Template install perhaps they were set at '5' to match the custom install. Then needed to be set to the correct values to work with Joomla after the update ?

I'll check that out tonight and post what I find, it would be interesting to know how it was before since it was a simple fix, finding what caused it was the learning curve.

You didn't find what caused it ... you found something that was wrong not why it was wrong. If the values were correct prior to update then I would like to have a copy of the backup (prior to update). I could then see if the update caused it.

Hey Webdongle, so just to be clear, the file at your link is to replace this file:

administrator/modules/mod_menu/menu.php

When there are patches like this, will they be included in the next core release?
