Change/ Remove Article ID in URL?
I'm using Joomla's SEF settings in global config. (all 3 of them are active).
Is there a way, that you can change the link URL to an article.
Currently it is:
mysite.com/category/14-article-exmaple.html
Is there a way to remove the ID (14 in this case) from this URL?

Re: Change/ Remove Article ID in URL?
yes...the SEO URL is formd in the "alias" of the article. See your articles and change 14-article-example.html to article-example.
If you get html added you are using a sef extension and you can set it in that extension

Re: Change/ Remove Article ID in URL?
you are right in that the article alias forms the SEO URL, but the ID is not listed in the admin side in the article settings.
All that I put in the aliases of my article is; 'article-example' and not '14-article-example'
14 - being the ID, is automatically generated, I have not put that there.
Thanks for the help.

Re: Change/ Remove Article ID in URL?
hp router doesn't work anymore and there is no updated version of it, so what else can we do about removing IDs?
as a matter of fact, there needs to be a way of removing "component/content/article" as well.

You could try sh404SEF or SEF Advance extensions, review it's extensions on JEDlearwbc4 wrote:hp router doesn't work anymore and there is no updated version of it, so what else can we do about removing IDs?

Hey, I am having the same problem and instead of starting a new thread I decided to post here. Is there any update on this post to easily get rid of the article ID turning up in the URL?

Re: Change/ Remove Article ID in URL?
So it looks like the only way to fix this without adding an extension is to add the article to a menu. Is there any way to do that automatically?
Also, are there any plans to fix this issue in the Joomla SEF component? This really feels "broken".

Re: Change/ Remove Article ID in URL?
Without an extension, the only way to remove the article id is to create a menu item leading to the article. Obviously for blogs or sites where a lot of content is regularly posted this is impractical. But on a smaller site, no problem. I have a bunch of sites using native SEF where you won't find any or many numbers...
But personally, I have no big problem with the number anyway. I doubt it hurts your seo much but then probably no one is really sure. If you don't like it, I have used HP router but it has a couple quirks (or had). The bigger SEF extensions totally solve the issue but are bloaty IMO. sh404sef is one I've used that will give you a motherlode of SEF options...
The reason the numbers are still around is someone somewhere once thought it would be a good feature to be able to have copies of the same article, but with different module placements... Vote here if you'd like to change that http://ideas.joomla.org/forums/84261-jo ... ?ref=title

Re: Change/ Remove Article ID in URL?
The urls each component writes are determined by the author of each component. That would probably be the best place to get support.
If you are using sh404sef, there has to be a plugin available and enabled for it to produce good urls. Where to go to get support for these plugins depends. Depending on the component, sometimes it would be Anything Digital, sometimes the component author, or sometimes a 3rd party (you would have bought it from them).

Re: Change/ Remove Article ID in URL?
My solution to removing the id's in articles i want to make links for in other areas is simple.
I made a new menu and made links for the articles i want clean links for, i simply don't link the menu anywhere on the site. But the sef still takes place on the articles using the alias.
Doing it this way i was able to make /articlename.html links all over my joomla 1.5 site.
I'm sure the sef packages are nice, but for a simple enough work around its not worth buying them for my sites.

Re: Change/ Remove Article ID in URL?
Yep exactly, most people call it a hidden menu (I like to call it a ghost menu for some reason...). But that's not going to be simple to keep up with if the site gets a lot of new content, or you have a client who is making updates. Easy solution for simple sites that don't change a lot though.

Re: Change/ Remove Article ID in URL?
If you want people to see and use a particular URL, then you must place that URL in a link on one or more pages of your site. URLs are defined in links.
It is too late to "change" a URL once the link has been clicked. The request for that URL has already been sent to the server.

Best answer... this makes sense. Not ideal, but this explains where the problem is.unleash.it wrote:Without an extension, the only way to remove the article id is to create a menu item leading to the article.
I searched first, I swear I did...

Thanks for this, took me forever to figure out I had to change the alias on the menu item and not on the article.unleash.it wrote:Without an extension, the only way to remove the article id is to create a menu item leading to the article.

Re: Change/ Remove Article ID in URL?
There really is no need for page names to have .html at the end. Once you are using extensionless URLs, matching URL requests with specific (HTML) content and (image, css, js) files becomes much easier to configure.
The HTTP specs already cater for folders and pages with specifics:
www.example.com/folder-name/ or www.example.com/category-name/
www.example.com/page-name
www.example.com/file-name.ext
