Re: Practical guide to automated upgrade J 1.7 to Joomla 2.5
One of my websites needs to be upgraded from 1.7.3 to 2.5.11. I read the previous 8 pages of comments and recommendations and have followed through on links and recommendations to no avail. I am unable to upgrade through the extension manager as no Joomla updates show up. So then I finally find the Joomla_2.5.0-Stable-Update_Package.zip file (within this thread), download it, and then tried to install via the Extension Manager Install, Upload Package File and received an "Unable to find install package" error. I checked the zip file and sure enough there is no install file included in the package.
I have been following the instructions on http://docs.joomla.org/Upgrading_from_J ... Joomla_2.5. The next thing it states is: "If you are unsure of the exact version of your 1.7.x or 2.5.x series then use Full package zip of the current 2.5.x from the Joomla download page". It does not tell me what will happen if I do this.
My question is, can I download the "Joomla_2.5.11-Stable-Full_Package.zip" to my computer and then install it via the Extension Manager Install, Upload Package File" route? (there is no Joomla_2.5.0-Stable-Update_Package.zip file listed). Is there a certain way I need to do this? What are the possible impacts?
Thank you for your help.
Betsy

Use google "joomla release 2.5.0" to find the release article for that particular release. In the release there are links to the full and update package. Advice you to use the update package.
Issue with migrating? Include logs/joomla_update.php in your report!

Re: Practical guide to automated upgrade J 1.7 to Joomla 2.5
Hello Loe, I clicked Purge Cache and see blue message"Purged Updates, 1 disables site was enabled" but no visible updates to select.
I then tried clicking Find Updates and I get a red message "Update: :Extension: Could not open /extension.xml"
I am currently running Joomla 1.7.0 and need to get to 2.5.X.
Once I solve this I will carefully follow your step by step instruction
I googled the error and I found this post having to do with jEvents, which I do have installed so that may be the problem.
Is there another way to upgrade, maybe manually?

Re: Practical guide to automated upgrade J 1.7 to Joomla 2.5
Hi!
I know I should have upgrade my J1.7 long time ago, but the time for it is now.
So when I want to discover upgrades in my Joomla 1.7, even after purge cache there is nothing to upgrade.
Tha sad thing is that, I've been searching almost every possible way to find a downloadable version of upgrade from 1.7 to 2.5 and there is non of instance on the entire Joomla base community pages.
Even those "how to pages" are writing to upgrade with core extensions discovery, and provides a download page witch is not consisting the upgrade file.
Here is the download area I found:
http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/joomla ... tion=index
Please provide me some help.

Re: Practical guide to automated upgrade J 1.7 to Joomla 2.5
There are some bugs in the updater in early 1.7. It's fixed in the version 1.7.6.
1. Update manually to 1.7.6
2. Use the updater to ugrade to 2.5

Many thanks, will update later today and report back. It's surprising how quickly one forgets when one has been away for some time. I have been deeply immersed in Windows 7 and 8 for a couple of years but now back with Joomla!

Re: Practical guide to automated upgrade J 1.7 to Joomla 2.5
Google on Joomla release 1.7.6 announcement.
Take any announcement and follow the link of the update.
On the left you can pick the release you want.
I found the release announcement of 1.7.5 which is closest to the one you want. Can't find 1.7.6 either.

Hi
Trying to update from 1.7.3 to 2.5. Have restored an akeeba backup locally and have followed your steps (purge cache and check for updates) but no update to 2.5 is listed. Is it possible taht I've confused Joomla by restoring the J1.7 backup into a new J2.5 local site?

Re: Practical guide to automated upgrade J 1.7 to Joomla 2.5
Hi, leolam.
my joomla version is 1.7.3.
Before clicking "Purge Cache", I can see version 2.5 in the update field.
I check the box and click update. However, system just shows a simple error message.
After clicking "Purge Cache", I can only see "There are no updates available at the moment. Please check again later."
But version still shows 1.73.
What's wrong with my system?
Do I need to delete any extension in order to update Joomla?
Thank you.

Re: Practical guide to automated upgrade J 1.7 to Joomla 2.5
Experience sharing:
I have a rather simple and very static Joomla site which I finally needed to update recently. Originally, it was running 1.7.0.
After studying various posts, I understand that (presumably) the 'Update' button will work only for 1.7.5 or upward, so (after studying more posts) I used the 'Extension Manager' 'Upload Package File' option to upgrade from 1.7.0 to 1.7.5.
After upgrading to 1.7.5, tried the 'Purge Cache' many times, still couldn't find the update option in the 'Update' screen.
So, maybe I was unlucky and using the 'Update' approach didn't seem to get to anywhere, I needed to find other (probably more difficult) approach.
More searching, find the Joomla document on upgrading to version 2.5:
http://docs.joomla.org/J2.5:Upgrading_f ... ng_version
Follow the "Install Method" and "Install from URL" option to install from the update package link in JoomlaCode:
http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/joomla ... ge_id=6231
Then, the site was successfully converted to 2.5.0.
Finally, the 'Update' screen is working, and I can then update the site from 2.5.0 to 2.5.16.
Well, the alternative approach doesn't seem that difficult afterall.

I use the Joomla! 1.7, Is it better to go directly to the version of Joomla! 3.2 update?
Or that the first Joomla! 2.5 version update do and then I'll update the version of Joomla! 3.2?
thank you.

Re: Practical guide to automated upgrade J 1.7 to Joomla 2.5
Hello Leolam, what happens when you find that Extension Manager > Update cannot find Joomla Update, after having clicked on Purge Cache. Extension Manager > Discover does not find Joomla Updates, either.leolam wrote:What steps to take in upgrading a Joomla 1.7 site to Joomla 2.5 via the automated upgrade mechanism in Joomla 1.7?
If you check now again the Database Tab you will see that all errors have vanished and that it shows now:
- In any version of Joomla 1.7 go to Extension Manager
- Here arrived go to Tab "Update"
- In this Tab you will see a button (top right) colored 'green' stating "Purge Cache" Hit that button First since you might see otherwise a message 'no updates available'
- The available updates in Joomla and Extensions will show. Make sure you do Joomla core (it will show Joomla 2.5.0 at this stage) first!.
- Check the box in front of the Joomla 2.5.0 line and hit top right "upgrade"
- Now the system can give you two sorts of output.....A 'successful' message or a lot of errors (do not get afraid or shocked!)
- In Both Cases (!) go to a new Tab you see under the same Extension Manager called "Database" (yes...even if the system states 'successful!'). Now you will either see a message that all is ok or a warning with a list of errors or missing DB entries.
- These we correct now by hitting the "FIX" button located in the Database Tab Top right corner!
This means you have fully upgraded to Joomla 2.5.0! Congrats!Database schema version (in #__schemas): 2.5.0-2012-01-14.
Database driver: mysqli.
62 database changes were checked successfully.
13 database changes did not alter table structure and were skipped.
Note: I you get errors as described on updating to 2.5, and after you have ran the Database – Fix, it may be a good idea to use the "Discover" option on the Extension Manager to install any Extension that was not installed because of the updating error! (thanks Roar!)
When your admin icons show vertical after the upgrade please do a full Purge Cache in your system panel, followed by a FULL cleansing of your browser cache. That will resolve the chaos in your admin panel layout.
When you notice that version info/date/author info are missing from some extensions (for instance "Smart Search") when you review them in the Extension Manager than go to "Manage", click the checkbox in front of the extension and click (in the top right corner) the 'Refresh Cache' button. That will take care of this.
Now only (!) is your system fully upgraded to Joomla 2.5!
If you get a "white-screen" after upgrading to Joomla 2.5 check out the error log in the root directory of your Joomla installation. That will tell you which extension is throwing fatal errors. Disable the extension mentioned in the error log and you have your site back on! (inform the extension developer about the error so he/she can correct!)
Note the version info has been taken out by Joomla-core in admin backend for this version due to a reported little vulnerability in having it hard coded in the admin templates. This function will return in a module most likely in Joomla 2.5.1. You can see the version at this moment under 'System Information' You can install the version information module here: http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=625&t=691155 (new version module)
Please first make a selection from the list issue: Download and install and publish the plugin from http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f ... 0#p2730200
Happy upgrading! If you have a problem post here on the forum!
Leo
Edits are done to add instructions/improvements
I am trying to upgrade J1.7.2 Stable to J2.5.x on xampp with Win 7.
At this time I have not found a Simple Straight Forward Method of Upgrading or Migrating on the Forum. Is there on Single Document, that preferably shows a One Click Method, that actually works.
Thank You
