Flash?
Let's not fight the Macromedia/Adobe monster please!
Don't get me wrong, besides their high prices they make some awesome software!
A lot of my development has been done with the help of PS CS2, Fireworks, Dreamweaver etc., but I'd hate to see the OSM crew get tangled up with the deep roster of Silicon Valley lawyers.

Re: Poll for the new CMS name
Maybe, like Firefox, Dreamweaver and Microsoft, we put two easily spelt and pronounced words together to create a new, single word brand name, such as:
OpenMambo
FreeSpirit
CodeRed
... or ...?
OpenMambo

Tango and Salsa are my two favourites but I'm sure I read somewhere in the last 21 pages that both are already in use and so aren't available for the "CMS with no name".

Re: Poll for the new CMS name
I have read through every single post relating to names and spent some time checking out the ones that seemed the most popular. Not bothering any more.
The dev team asked for names to be suggested http://forum.opensourcematters.org/inde ... 272.0.html
We have already lost the Mambo name, I certainly don't want to see us in a similar position in a few years from now because we chose a name which we couldn't protect. So, I'll add my bit to the request that :
My own opinion is that we should also stay clear of any geeky, cutesy, or dance-related names. What might seem fun now, could come back to bite us when the project-with-no-name is starting to take over the world and we are pushing into corporate markets.
Let's not limit ourselves, or the future development of the project by adding CMS to it. The project is not that limited, but getting buy-in from new users (including corporates) could be difficult if it is said to be much more than a CMS but still named that way.
The dev team asked for names to be suggested http://forum.opensourcematters.org/inde ... 272.0.html
So, if we as a community want to be helpful, we would not just pluck nice-sounding names out of thin air and suggest them UNTIL WE HAVE CHECKED THAT THEY MEET THE OBJECTIVES.Please post your suggestions here keeping in mind:
* it should be easy to remember and spell
* the domain should be available
* the meaning of the word if applicable (for example if it's a swahili word)
* has no trademark or copyright restrictions or prior use (for example, Mambo is also a trademark of Mambo Clothing)

by adding: it really must be a name we can protect. Most generic names and those in common use cannot be trademarked.* has no trademark or copyright restrictions or prior use

advocate (the name of a world-renowned gay & lesbian magazine and a number of newspapers) has no domains left. There are also trademark and copyright issues.
foster - no domains, cannot be trademarked. Too close too, to Foster's - a global beer brand.
Sorry to be a wet blanket

Interesting... how can they *ALL* have copyright's to this same word? I thought only one can hold the copyrightElpie wrote: advocate (the name of a world-renowned gay & lesbian magazine and a number of newspapers) has no domains left. There are also trademark and copyright issues.
Domain name will not be a problem either when you simply add "opensource" or "osadvocate" to make it a dot name. Same with the others. You just get creative with "os" for open source.
If there is a will there is a way.

Re: Poll for the new CMS name
The word "advocate" cannot be coyright as it is a generic word. However, trademarks (while generally not permitted on generic or common words) can have the same word trademarked over and over again in some countries - notably the US. If you search the US trademarks for example, you will see there are many businesses which have trademarked the name "Mambo" - they each hold the trademakes in different classifications.Triplicate wrote:Interesting... how can they *ALL* have copyright's to this same word? Miro, for eg, have applied to register the trademark, "Mambo" in Australia. There is already a Mambo trademark there which is owned by Mambo Graphics, who primarily manufacture clothing.
So, the Miro-Mambo would not be confused with the Mambo-Mambo as they are trading in completely different products in different markets.
That is a VERY simplified response. Intellectual property law is very complex and made even more complex when one has to start considering world-wide issues.
Hope this helps

Re: Poll for the new CMS name
Good idea; two words or parts of words together, to make one new, trademarkable word. Yep. That's what we can do.
OK; how to you say, "red flower" in some other great languages? I am thinking of the marvelous words they use for new car models. Surely, we can use that sort of thinking to find great combinations.
What dance do children commonly do in other countries? What is it called? (Because, this software is so easy, it's like child's play...) Or, what do you call some spicey dishes? Fiore rosso is red rose in Italian...(asked my husband) Padparadsha...my favorite sapphire in the world...( it's a pink/orange!)
Some of the words from Asia are easy to spell and pronounce, too, so, maybe we'll find new words there?
